Editou Mehcuky.—We notice a
number of tickets suggested in vnur
last issue as suitable candidates for
mayor and aldermen at the ensuing
September election, and it is our de
sire to express our choice for candi
dates. We do not propose to coniine
ourselves to the names suggested or
to strike a name from the list, but
disregarding personalities and rising
to the higher plane of competency,
ability and fitness, we would define
the tied of men we want, and point
out the work we willoxpectof them.
We want men of sterling worth, men
who own property in the
city because that class ncc-
esarily have a peculiar in
terest in the well faro ol' the city, and
the promulgation of such laws as
condemn and punish vice and en
courage morality and sobriety. M r c
want men fearless in the discharge
of duty, men who would scorn to sacri
fice an iota of conscientious duty for
the largest measure of popularity
with any class. Men who do not
seek the office for the furtherance of
any personal scheme or for the perso
nal gain of themselves or relatives, but
men who accept it and under all cir
cumstances, look to the good of the
city.
Now the work we want done is:

Mayor himself cannot tell you the
exact law upon scarcely any given
subject, simply because it would be
worth bis annual salary to attempt
to attempt to study the ordinances
in their present shape and no man
can blame him for remaining in ig

years lias resolved mentally or
verbally at the first meeting to have the
ordinances codified, lmt when the op
portunity came to tackle the elephant
no man imd sufficient courage, thus
the ohl conglomeration remains.
Give us a board ot Alderman with
sufficient backbone to have this mat

earnestness on this point because wg
can novel-forgot the blush of shame
that burned our checks m 1881 & 2,

ALABASTINE
■
A Superior Substitute
for Kalsomine, etc.
.■■■ ■( 1 .( v V.
AlabasUno Is the first and only preparation
.made from calcined gypsum rook, for appU-
,cation to walls with a brush, and Is fully cov-.
ored by patcni3 and perfected by many years
of experiments. It is the only permanent
wall finish, and admits of applying as many
coats as desired, one over another, to any
hard surface, without danger of scaling, or
noticeably adding to tho thickness of Ilia
wall, which is strengthened nud Improved by
each additional coat, from time to tlmo. It
is the only material for tho purpose not de
pendent upon gluo for Us adhesiveness.
Alobnstiuo is hardened on the wall by ago,
moisture, etc., while all kalsomines or whit,
emng preparations have Inert soft chalks
and glue for their base, which nre rendered ■
soft or scaled in a very short time. !
In addition to tho obovo advantages,
Alabasttno is less expensive, ns it requires
but one-half tho number of pounds to cover ■
the same amount of surface with two coats, I
is ready for use by adding water, aud easily
applied by any oue.
