Mr. F.uitok :
Historian’ tell ns, in the days when
Rome sat upon her siv.'n hills and fiom
her throne of beauty ruled the world, it was
til e custom, among the upper class of her
society, when called upon by their friends
to display their gold and silver plate their
ornaments and jewels. It is related further,
tnat when a rich Companion lady called
upon Cornelia, the widow of Simpranius
Gracchu and the mother of twelve children,
she displayed some of her rich ornaments
nd asked Cornelia where were hers? Cor
nelia, discarding the vain nnd silly customs
of the day, proudly pointed to her children
and said : These are my jewels." If there
is one mother and father, more than anoth
er, who can, like Cornelia, point to their
children and proudly nnd truthfully any.
“These arc my jewels;" that mother and
father is Mr. nnd Mrs. \V. L Brown of this
comity, This good man nml woman have
never amassed stocks and heaps of this
worlds goods. The edict about tho eve of
the cambric needle hns no terrors for them.
They have been content with unall acres,
surrounded with the ordinary comforts of
life, blit determined on sending into society
ami giving to the world three daughters und
ten hons the peers nnd equals of nnv, for
being holiest, upright, high-toned, Indus
trious and useful men and women, leaders
as iiiercliunte, physicians and farmers,
Wli.le the good old man and woman, when
they cross over the river will not leave
innrriud fortunes tu their children, yet they
will leave in their children an iiivalmible
accession to society and a monument of
their goodness and greatness. To trnin a
child, as heshonld go, is equal to command
ing an army.
If their noble sons sod daughters ton-
tinne exerting good influences and if, as
the philosophers say, every influence goes
on and on, spreading like the ripples on the
calm bosom of an inland lake, ami if nt tliu
end of time all the good llicy have done
themselves directly, all the good the) will
have done indirectly through their children
and others, and then others, nml one nml
