The Memorial exercises passed off
pleasantly on Monday, the 27tli u 11.
Appropriate contributions, musical,
floral and literary were dispensed on
this occasion. The general suspen
sion of business in our town and the
large crowd that turned out to pay
tribute to the memory of those who
tell under the confederate flag, in de
fense of Southern rights’, furnish the
highest evidence that our people are
not without patriotism, and tlieir
hearts are lull of appreciation for the
services rendered by thegnllatit con
federates, both living nad dead.
Mr. Beverly B. Evans Jr. deliver
ed a mngnili cent •mitt ion, holding the
large crowd ns one for 30 minutes or
more. W Idle Mr. Kraus’ address was
eminently appropriate, it wns some
thing outside of the usual “Memorial
Day Oration,” Mr Evans is receiv
ing congratulations from all quarters
on his superb effort.
The music dispensed by the band
on this occasion, under the leadership
ot Prof. Shirs ton, creates in us the
belief that our boys may accept, with
out fear of being turned down, the in
vitation to visit Augustn during the
firemen's parade this month.

MRS. CULLENS’ SCHOOL.
By the streets of ‘ by and by” one

51it. Knrroit.—Friday tiie 24th of
April was a joyous nnd memorable
day, with tho friends, children and
patrons of the school taught by Mrs.
5Iollie Cullens, near Oconee. The
day dawned bright and lovely, and
was a true harbinger ol’the pleasant
event we hiul come together to enjoy,
the examination, speeches and com
positions of the children taught by
Mrs. Cullens.
The thorough examination of the
children in the various branches ai d
tlieir prompt answers, stamped Mrs.
C_ as an efficient and industrious
teacher and demonstrated, that she
is firstly entitled to the distinction
she onjoys as such. Don’t remember
to have ever seen a bevy of brighter
children, and tlieir advancement, lor
their opportunities, is simply incred
ible.
At twelve o’clock wo repaired to
the grove where wo found a long ta
bic loaded with every substantial
and delicacy that could tempt the in
ner man. After all were satisfied
there was still enough left to have fo 1
as many more.
After dinner we listened to some
of tho best spellers in the county.
Then came the reading speeches and
compositions. Where all did so wel
it would prehaps bo unjust to indi
vidunlize. The exercises of the day-
closed by an address from Mr. J. A.
Robson which was sensible and well
Limed, and did 51 r. R— great credit.
