TIIE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
The Catholic church on south
Smith street, now receiving its fin
ishing touches from the painter, is
one of the handsomest buildings in
Middle Georgia.
The untiring zeal of the Rev. Fa
ther \V. A. McCarty, the faithful
pastor of the Catholic population of
our city, iu raising funds for tho erec
tion and furnishing of it, is worthy
of all commendation. It is not sur
prising at all that the Rev. gentle
man meets with such signal sncccss
in his holy calling, as his uniform
urbanity combined with unaffected
sociability is well calculated to make
him friends amongst all classes of
people with whom he comes in con
tact.
Elaborate preparations are being
made for the consecration by the lit.
Rev. Bishop Northrop, of Charleston,
who will be assisted by several
priests from the larger cities in Geor
gia, on the first Sunday in June
next.
Tho building is upon the lot gen
erously donated by Dr. A. Mathis
several years ago; the carpenter
work is by Mr. J, T. Ailing of Mill-
edgcvillc, who closely adhered to the
plan and specifications gratuitously
furnished to the church by Mr.
Frederick an accomplished
architect of Baltimore. The paint
ing so neatly done by Dawson Hays
of our city, is quite creditable to
him. The stained glass windows
are of a very handsome design, es
pecially the circular emblematic win
dow over the ultar, all of them shed
ding that mellow light into the in
terior, whicu is so much admired in
the old Cathedrals of Europe.
The whole structure is an ideal Bas
ilica, and with its well proportioned
spire, surmounted by a gilded cross,
is quite an ornament to our city and
no doubt of much gratification to our
citizens of the Catholic faith
All that is wanted to make it com
plete is a sweet toned bell t,» call the
faithful ta their matin and vesper
devotions. *
