The tT reimuiy al Hi.- Deillcafltm of a
Gntholie Cliarcli,
1. The bishop who dedicates a church,
together with tho people for whom (lie church
is dedicated, must, oil the appointed day,
fast until the dedication. This pious cus
tom is derived from nn apostolic tradition
according to which fasting was to be ob
served by every one before evory high so
lemnity, At the same time, we are thereby
reminded that we ought, by mortification
and abstinence, to dcdbntcd our soul amt
body as spiritual temples to (toil: and that
without penance we caunot oi.hr into tli
house of God, eternal in the heavens.
2. The relics of the saints nod tin ee grain,
of incense, which arent the dedication lobe
inclosed ill the altar, are o i the previous
day deposited in a place prepared near the
church.
The alter represents Christ: the p'ncing
nf the holy relics iu a separate place is
therefore to remind iis that thus the sni Us
lived Oil oartli ns strangers, in order one day
to be incorporated with Christ (2 Cor. v. 4).
The insertion of the relic.) of the saints into
the alter is to remind us of the iminfite
union of the saints with Cliibt.
3. On the walls of the church are creeled
twelve crosses, before each of which isplaeed
a candle: those candles nro lighted before
the commencement of the dedicate n. The
holy cross is that sign in which, nfler (lie
example of St. Paul, wo Christians should
glory, Tlie twelve lights represent the
twelve Apostles; who were called by Jesus
the lights of the world, and (Matt. v. II)
wlm proclaimed the faith in Christ crucified
throughout the world. The lighting of (lie
candles before the commcncbnient of the
dedication, signifies that the Apostles, before
ls-ginlng to propagate the Church of Jesus
Christ, were kindled with the tiro of the
Holy Ghost.
4- The In-bop recites tlie Penitential
Psalms, blesses water and salt and there
with sprinkles first himself and those next
him, and then walls of the church three
times, within and without, after each sprin
kling knocking with liis crosier, nt the
church door, which is not opened till after
the third time.
The holy water reminds us tlint we nro
demised by the blood of Jesus, nod that we
ought to nppear before God with contrite
hearts. The sprinkling llirie times reminds
us,on the one hand, of tlie most holy Trinity
by whom nil tilings nre sanctified; and on
the other, of the three hundred years of per
secution of the early Christians- The open
ing of the door after the three knockiugs.
signifies that the devil is overcome only by
earnest combat; that we could never have
entered heaven unless Christ bail opened it
for us by llis dentil on the cross; that ive too
must combat, nnd will conquer, if we fight
under the cross,
Tho bishop therefore nukes the sign ol
... j.... ,,j the cross on the threshold, nnd says, “Be-
thus to spread tho glorious i * ,<, *‘* l *‘° H 'b' n °Dlu cross; our enemies shall
-«..i i ..i ... . | fly therefrom.”

One of tlie most notable events in
tlie religions history of Sundersville
transpired on Sunday last, when tlie
beautiful Catholic Church on South
Smith street was consecrated with all
lie pomp, with which the impres
sive ritual of the Roman eatjiolie
church invests occasions of this kind.
Right Rev. Bishop Norlhorp of
Charleston assisted by ten priests
performed the consecration services,
which began with a procession of
Bishop, priests and acolytes around
the outside ot the bidding chanting
a dedicatoiy hymn. Tlie prosession
then entered tho church, when tlie
altar which was beautifully decorated
with flowers and plants and mi-
nicrnus candles was consecrated by
tlie Bishop who sprinkled holy water
upon it as well as upon the aisles and
seats, while several good sisters of
Mount de Sales Academy of Macon
intoned a joyful hymn accompanied
upon tlie organ by Prof, llutliuance
mid bis son.
Alt r tlie completion of theeonsecra
tion services, Bishop Northrop as
cended the altar and delivered a
chaste and eloquent sermon founded
upon tlie scripture lesson of tlie day,
impressing upon his hearers the no
ccssity of religion to the human heart.
After tho sermon A r ery Rpv. Father
Ciifi’crty assisted by Rev. Far. Queni-
liin of St. Patricks Parish,Augimta
as Deacon, and Rev. Father AVilson
of Aiken S. C. sub-deacon, performed
Mass Hitts ending the services which
hud lasted from 10 A. M. to 1 p. M.
At night, vespers were read and
utiotlie.i eloquent scymon was dcliv-
5. The bishop, accompanied only by those
wlm serve (it tlie alter, enters into the church,
leaving tlie clergy uml people ouisiile the
church.

torious.
0. 1 lie hymn ”Yeni Creator Spirituis,’)
in then intoned, the church is then strewn
with ashes; the Litany of All Sduts nnd
Other prayers nre said, nnd the honedietun is
sung; d iring which the bishop with his cro-
sier writes in the strewn ashes the latin nnd
gi-ei-k alphabets in the form of a cross.
Hereby is signified tli it through the pow
er of (lie cross of Christ, people of different
nations and tongues are gathered into the
one Church,
7. The bisho-i blesses water, wine, salt
nnd ashes, mixes them together nnd there
with sprinkles the alter and the walls of the
Church-
This water is culled “Gregoran,” because
Pope Gregory tlie Great (in the Cth centu
ry) instituted this custom of blessing witli
Water, wine, salt and nslies iningb d togeth
er. By it is signified the union of the di-
vineand human natures iu Christ; the wa
ter being the emblem of his human, thewine
of his divine nature. The aslu-s are an em
blem of death; the salt, incorruptibility;
and both together, of man, who consists of a
mortal body and nil immortal soul. The
mingling of the water, wine, ashes nnd salt,
delicti s the intimate union of man with Christ
through the holy sacraments; which is also
indicated by sprinkling the walls, which nre
nil emblem of Christian people, and the alter
which is an emblem of Christ.
8 On tlie table of tlie alter are engraved
live crosses, which tlie bishop amioinls with
holy oil and chrism,
The five crosses are to remind us of tlie
five wounds of Jesus. The nnointingof them
will) holy oil and chrism signafics that in-
uvisahle unction by which Jesus w ith the
Holy Ghost,
9. The holy relics, before lliey nre brought

church by the clergy iu procession. The
people follow them, chanting, Kyrie eleison!
Lord have mercy upon us! Final ly the

bishop.
10. Under the guidance of Christ, wc
must follow the saints in order to arrive at
the church triumphant in heaven. Mean
while we call without ceasing upon God
from this world lor mercy and grace, that
ave may one day gain admittance into tilt-
heavenly company of the saints.
11. On entering the church the 1 11) Psalm
is Bung.
Therein is set forth tlie joy of the saints
when Clirist shall bring the elect into tlie
heavenly temple to enjoy eternal glory,

tlie alter and closes tip the stone, upon which
lie rests with mortcr prepared with the
Gregorian water.
I bus shall the saints in heaven be incor
porated with Clirist, making one body witli
him; but wo must remember that wo cun
only receive through Christ, what we de-’
sire to obtain by I he intercession of the saints.
13. One of the priests passes around the
alter incensing it.
