OUlt SCHOOL.
The closing exorcises of our
public school were held in Wat
kins’ Ilall on Tuesday tho Oth inst,
and wus satisfactory in tho high
est degree.
The declamation on the morning
programme of exercises wns much
above the average in excellence,
add we wutched closely to see to
whom we might pay the compli
ment of mentioning as best, hut
the little fellows and the larger
ones all did so well that we would
do them an injustice to use any
name without namihgnll, and this
our space forbids.
The recitations by tho gradu
ates of “Tho Changed Cross” “The
Legend of Uregenz” nnd “Shilo’s
Plains,” was exceptionally fine and
.justly merited the closo attention
and hearty appplause they re
ceived.
At 12 o'clock lion, James K.
Hines delivered the annual ad
dress, which was rather unique in
style and at one time we trembled
'tor the gifted orator lest in advo
cating worldly amusements he
might go just a step too tar and
receive an avalanche of condemna
tion from the large number of
uncompromising Methodists and
Baptib'g present, but he managed
cleverly to steer clear of both the
rocks nnd whirlpool, and as he
always does, held his audience’s
rujH attention.
The evening entertainment was
as good or even better than the
morning. The programme wus
well arranged aud as well per
formed.
The Cornet Band was on hand
snd rendered valuable assistance
ou both occasion.

At the residence of the bride's fa
ther in this city, on Thursday last
Mr. W. L Mathews, Jr., of Sylvania,
and Miss Mary Beulah Park, Rev
Wm, Park otficiating.
Tin bride was the recipient of
many elegant and appreciated pres
ents from valued friends.
Special From Sylvania to the Const i-
tution.
On Friday night tho “Cephalfnn
Club," a literary organization of our
town, of which Mr. Mathews is a
member, gave a grand reception in
honor of his marriage, which was
attended by all the beauty and chiv
alry of those rounding country. The
reception wns hold at the residence
of Colonel George U. Black, and was
pre-eminently the most successful
allair of the kind that has ever been
held in our town. A parasol made
of roses hung from the ceiling in the
parlor, nnd under this the newly
married editor and Ids nccomplisited
bride stood and received the congrat
ulations of many friends. Mr. Math
ews in his bcnedictino state scorned
gayer aud happier looking than ever
before, and many were the well de
served compliments and good wishes
that were made in regard to the happy
pair who had just launched upon the
matrimonial sen.
Ilis wife, though a stranger here,
won the hearts of all by her graceful
demeanor nnd her genial accomplish
ed manners, The yard at tho hack
on the house was brilliantly illumi
nated with Japanese lanterns, hung
at intervals among the trees, nnd lie
Heath these the young couples gnyly
chatted nnd strolled, or sealed upon
rustle benches, enjoyed tho soft nnd
mellow beauty of the scone. Ice
cream and other refreshments wore
served up during the evening in pro
fusion' 2’ho night was far spent
when the guests reluctantly took
their leave nnd retired from the scene
ofgn.vcty. This is tho (list public
entertainment that the Ccphnlian
club lias given, nnd certainly reflects
credit upon it. Tho society will soon
commence the erection of a building
to b(5 used as a library and for other
purposes.
Many peoplo think that S. S. S.
