Toon, Atlanta, Ga: My Dear Sir: —
I thank you for your kind letter of
the 0th inst. Atlanta has done a 110-
ble work in t lie interest of the A'. M.
C. A., and I believe God will bless
her for it, and 1 trust Nashville will
conic up to the importance of the
work. Y'ott ask me to say something
about Rev. Sam Jones and his work
iu Nashville. It would beimpossi-
ble to describe his methods and man
ner; they are unique. He blows a
tremendous cyclone against some vi
ces, but into it there is so much true
love for humanity and for sinners,
that even those whose sins he attacks
are nttacted rather than repelled.
The result of his works in this
city is seen in bolter attendance on
ordinary church services, especi
ally weekly prayer meetings; large
additions of member! in nearly all
the diuretics, less dissipation and
pr jfnnity. Among the converts are
many of the oldest and most promi
nent citizens and many well known
sinners. Nashville has great cause
to lie thankful for his having come
amongst us. Yours Truly,

AVIiile it is nothing unusual for
Col. Johnston to slip away from
town and be gone a month or longer,
especially lit thuopening of the sum-
moo season, a trip to L-enlon 1 tent
ed some surprise, on inquiry, it
was learned that col Johnston's trip
was purely a business one, and grew
out of a Confederate bond transact
ion.
It seems that just after the war, i
! the effects, furniture and plunder of j
the Southern Bank at Savannah were
sold nt auction, tne bank having suc
cumbed to the fates. In the plun
der was a small black trunk which
gave no outward sign of the contents,
tint Colonel Johnston, who was some
what of a Mrs. Toodles, thought it
posossed value, and it was knocked
down to him at $5,00. When opened
it was found to contain $1,500,000
in Confederate bonds. Of course at
tlint time there was no demand for
Confederate bonds, but Col. Johns
ton saw fit to send them to Mr. Hut
ton, treasurer of the Open Stock Ex
change, at Loudon, to he held sub
ject to his order.
The years llitied by and there was
no demaul for the bonds except front
curiosity-hunters, until n few months
ago, when a mysterious call and a
good price was offered for them. It
will he remembered -that the dust-
covered archives of nearly every fam
ily in the land wore searched for
Confederate bonds, and brokers
throughout the country were paying
good figures for them. Col. Johnst
on sold his million an 1 a half to a
Ne-.v York party and gavo h; 111 tin or
der on llulton, in London for them.
Strange to say that Hutton refused
to deliver them, and Col. Johnston
instilutedsiiil to recover, the case be
ing set to July 5th. Col. Johnston’s
attorneys in London cabled him to
he present nt tho hearing of the suit,
and it was this business that takes
