On tiio afternoon of November?,
Choroy was standing not far from tho

Choroy watched tho vchiclo depart,

tho brilliancy came from nothing less
Hum a diamond. As he drew near the

that s splendid piece of jewelry lay in
tho mud. For a moment Iio hesitnied.
Paris is not a city whore a person other
than a chillonior can pick anything from

well, aud hud recourse, therefore, to u

he appeals d to ho searching for some

On examining his find ho was satisfied
that it was most xuluuhlo. A large brilliant

Next morning ho visited tlie Rue do

“Well, what do you think about it,

“i’aste,” was tho ulmost contemptu

“There you are wrong," said Choroy;

And lie drew a morning newspaper

“If tlioy had boon genuine,” was the

“A thousand francs is a good deal of

“To you it may he,” was tho answer;
“but lot me toll you that if these jewels

“Thirty thousand francs!” exclaimed
Cheroy.
“Fvcry sou of it,” said Greuze. “Let

Choroy handed him the brooch and he
once more scrutinized it closely.
“They may be genuine,” lie said;
