| AUGUST A NEWS.]
This morning the Narrow Gauge
Rotul brought to Augusta the first
bale of cotton it hits ever hauled this
way. Mr. John Rogers raised it this
year in Jefferson county, and ship
ped it from Multi lews station, thirty-
three miles from Augusta. It was
consigned to Messrs. Jordan ifc Co.,
weighed 404 pounds, and classed
middling. Mr. W. M. Jordan is a
native of old Jefferson, nnd this is a
nice compliment to him that ho
should get the fist bale from his old
county over the baity road, Success
to Jordan it Co., and may many more
bales follow this one.

Judge Twiggs always enjoys him
self when at the North with truly
loyal friends there. About the time
of Gen. Grant’s funeral a Yankee
friend accosted the Judge nnd kindly
said; “Old fellow we whipped you
in the war, but all that is over and
makes no ditfercnco."
"Whipped us,” said the Judge.
“Von are mistaken. You aid noth
ing of the sort.”
"Conte now, Judge, you know wo
did."
"My dear boy" replied his honor in
his most dramatic tones, "you have
got the matter wrong—all wrong. I
am astonished at your ignorance.
Why wc wore ourselves out w hipping-

The bloody chasm was forthwith
bridged by some extra dry.
