A Ohlllnii Hero.
There have never been but two “hand-
to-hand” fights between iron-clads in
the history of nnvul warfare. One took
place in Hampton Hoads, between tho
Monitor and tho Merrimnc, as we ail
know. Tho other wns nt Iquique, Peru,
between tho Peruvian rain Huosear and
tho Ohilian iron clad Esmeralda. Ad
miral Grau, a Peruvian of Gurman
ancestry, commanded the former, and
Arthur Pratt, a Chilian of English
ancestry, tho latter. The Huescar was
the swifter and more powerful vessel,
and struck the other amidships. As she
was sinking Grau struck her again, and
as the two vessels came together, Pratt
sprang on board the Huescar, with two
revolvers, and killed sevon or eight mtn
before he was shot down. His vessel,
the Esmeralda, with all on board, went
to the bottom of the ocean, and he lay
alono on tho deck of the victor, sur
rounded by the bodies of tho men ho
killed. For this desperato act tho
Chiilanos have made him. their ideal
hero, and thore is a monument to his
memory in nearly every town. Streets

and even lotteries are named in hia
honor, and the greatest national tribute
is to destroy the custom house iu order
to erect his monument in tho most con
spicuous place in the principal city.
Greenbacks.
A Broken Heart.
Tho term broken heart as commonly
applied to doath from excessive grief, is
not a vulgar error, but may arise from
violent muscular exercise or strong men
tal emotions. The affection was, it is
believed, first described by Harvey; but
since bis day several oases have been ob
served. Morgagni has recorded s few
examples, among them that of George
II. of England, who died suddenly of
this disease in 1700, and, what is very
curious, Morgagni himself became a vic
tim to the same malady.
“Old Greenbacks,” was the soubriquet
I riven to Becrctary Chase in the army,
from the green ink with which the backs
of the United States paper mouey was
printed. This ink was invented by Stacy
J. Edson, and patented in 1857, as anti
photographic. It could not be photo
graphed on account of its color, and
could not be dislodged by alkalies by the
counterfeiters to got a complete fac
simile of tbe bills, and os it was a secret
known only by the American Bank Note
company and the inventor, it was im
possible to counterfeit the greenback
money. It was used by many bauks be
fore the war, but was "never a leading
feature in the bill; but even if tho com
position of tho ink had bceu known, it
would have been of no use, os the work
could not be copied from the genuine
bills with nay kind of ink. The date of
the patent could be seen on all the bills,
in small print. O d Genera! Spinner
wanted to have Congress enact a law
making tho counterfeiting of national,
notes a capital offence, as was once the
case in Great Britain, and to have them
bear the legend which had been on the
bills then issued by the Bank of Eng
land: “To Counterfeit is Death.”—Bent
Verity Poore.
