CONVEWTION or THE WCTl!,
We give a brief synopsis taken
front the Telegraph, of Mrs Chapins
address on Thursday to convention
in Macon. 'This esiimnblo lady is
doing n noble work nnd many will be
tlie Htnra in her crown ttbovo
Mrs. Chapin begun by saying that
•dm presented the appeal of a South
ein mother lo Southern gentlemen.
She referred lo tho chivalry of the
men of the South, nnd said that i*
had never given denial lo the prayer
"t woman’s heart. Tho women or
the South had sacrificed much dit-
r.ng the war. Now, in time of ponce
could not the men ofonrcounUy sac-
riileo something, it snerilico it was,
Ibr Southern womanhood?
Only a mother knows the value of
her boy. She d ton not want to sol,
liis worldly welfare and his immor
lal destiny for Ihe little pitiful frac
tion of a liquor dealer’s liceuso.
Some say “let the men drink and
lake the consequences." Alas! the
mrn Luke the drink and the women
and children take the consequences.
A FINISHED JOB.
The farmer* like* to see the gath
ered crop—his finished work. The
lawyer likes to see tlie brief which
rcprcscnltt the result ofliih brain la
bor.
The mechanic likes to look upon
tbc job which is tbc completed pro
duct of his handicraft. Hut what
arc the finished Jobs ot the liquor
dealer? Criminals, paupers, lunatics
suicides, wrecked and dcspuiiing the pretty blue ticket, with a wel
stillercrs. A few years ago i saw

Mr. Kditok:
It has been so long since I dipped
my pen in the ink-well to give to the
tenders of any paper, things I have
heard, and sonic things I have seen
in passing through this busy world,
that it was cankered and unfit for
use. This thought came to my
tnind, bow important Is exercise and
motion. Tbo boy that lolls arouud,
and never runs, jumps, climbs,
rompa, and plays la poorly developed
when he arrives at the y ears of man
hood. The "deep blue sea' would
soon hcco.no Ktagnuut were it nut
for the “dancing waves" which ebb
and flow in every twenty four hours.
How soon machinery, mechanical
tools and agricultural implements,
when permitted to lie idle, rust nuil
become unlit for llie purposes for
which they wore manufactured. 1
was presenting this thought the
other day to ray old friend Hoggs,
He replied, while that fact was true
when applied to machinery, tools
etc., the verse was true when applied
lo "Womans Tongues," (says X to
my scl': poor women don't they
catch it.)
For said lie iu a very positive and
earnest manner, last sunTmer my
wife was confined to her room for
nine weeks with what tlie Or culled
‘slow fever," during a greater p it*
tioa of the time was too feeble to
talk but very little,• Imt finally she
recovered, and since llie restoration
to her usual good health, I buzzard
nothing in the assertion that her
“tongue" i tins glibber than it ever
dill before her sickness (says 1 to
m . self, my wiles tong' e uns glib tc o
when site shouts out some morning
a little after day break "Mr. Dev
reaux, going to hoc any in the
.garden this morning before break
fast?’’)
I saw a sight a few evenings since
that dazzled iny oecnlar optics on th s
"mundane sphere," I will hero ro-
inui k that if the rcuilsr will pardon
my ugotiHiii, I will add, that 1 iiavu
turned down the bill of life, and will
soon be placed upon the' roll of "tbo
old men of the county," i have uIh»
aeeii n good dual of tbo world in my
life lime. I Iiavu visited Dublin,
Fenn’s Bridge und tho Shoals of ihe
Ogeeolieo. I never saw tho sight be
fore, I suppose you are eager to know
what it was; I will not keep you any
longer in suspense, I saw “an editor
weep." A country luau came rush,
ing upt) M.iek and inquired; "Why
those teal s?" Hu replied, "I am uow
a middle aged man, have grown chil
dren, and it ia the Hi at time in my
fife that I ever made up my mind to
leave my uutivo county, I aiu now
about to bourd tho truin, uni', it is
so hard and sail to turn your back,
even for a ahort time upon tho scenes
of your childhood, endeared by a
thousand pleasing incidents," The
countryman remarked that his busi-
uras in Ihe city was to pay liiH dues
to tho Mmicuhy, Muck dried those
tears almost instantly, and soon I,ml
a smile upon his face similar to thu
olio lie ware on the evening of tile
‘21st of April when a o airier entue
from the 01st Dist., G. M. with the
good news tliut the dry ticket was 122
votes abend.
Ri adi r, if you see any of your cred
itors weeping, go at once and pay
your Dills, it soothes, and liouls thr
wounded heart sooner than almost
anything else.
In the recent Prohibition election
both sides claimed m.v ballot, but on
tlto day of tlie election, when I saw
at a great fair a liquor dealer's ex
hibit. It was an immense display.
I said to him:
"Sir. your exhibit is incomplete.'
“Why. madam, it is tlie largest ov
er made. It is niagnilic nt."
“No, sir; it is noL half an exhibit
