M"o would bc pleased tu have
every lady read tlic tract “She

Couldn't” Wo only given short ex
tract front it hare for waul of spaco.
At nn annual meeting of the
Wonia'n Board a Indy^rcmarkedlthat
alio bad once read a traef entitled
“Situ Hath Done VVliat She Could."
but, in view of tho Bcildistrust of
women in undertaking tlic conduct
of any of these Societies, and the
marked suecoss of those who had
undertaken, should site ever try to
write a tract, the title would he.
“Slieilath Done What Site Thought
Site Couldn't," We do not propose
to write a tract upon this subject,
yet we would like to jot down a few
thoughts upon it that may he i-uig-
gistive to many self-distrustful
women.
In that day when we shall till seo
face to face, and shall know even as
we are known, perhaps ono of tite
greatest surprises will lie the
amount of undeveloped talent dis
closed in ourselves und others,
talents that ltavo cot roiled and
almost gone into decay for want ef
use, In Lite clear light that shall
then shine op •ur earthly life, we
shall ho amazed at tlic number of
instances iu which the only requisite
needed for the accomplishment of
tieb'.o deeds was that we should put
our hands in those of our Elder
Brother, and go steadily forward.
However great the obstielea may
have been before ns, we may find
that if we had only tried to remove
them we should have discovered a
strength that we know not of, tt n
indwelling Spirit that would lutvo
carried us triumphantly over every
difficulty* How can tvo have any
adequate idea of our capacities til
they are triedV
Every endeavor in the Master’s
service will he owned of him, and
kepi in remembrance in that day
when lie makes up it is jewels. The
very ptoeess of exerting our powers
to thy uttermost is invigorating.
There are possibilities bef.to every
Christian woman in America that, if
rightly apprehended would fill her
with surprise and joy. 'We live so
much on the surface, in ilie rush and
whirl oi the present generation, that
we cau have no adequate knowledge
of ourselves, of our Master, or the
work he lias for us to do.
We can perceive also an immis
tukahlo tone of satisfaction in the
sentanco that “site hath done what
she thought oho couldn’t.” ,SI,o has
diseoveeod the buried talent; she
has triumphed over ohsticlos; site
lias loused intiitlerence and aliaycd
opposition; she has tried her powers,
and rejoices in their promise for
tho future! and, best of all, site
has laid firm hold of the hand of
her Elder Brother, who lias guided
her feeble footsteps in the wav that
he has chosen for her, aud her heart
is gbuklpued by ids uuseun approval
WOMAN'S C, T, UNION’S

col ujfijy.
Once there was a poor man, but
very cheerful, though sometimes he
would wish to have a little more
money so that lie need not bc obliged
to go up to tits pastures in cold fog
gy weather. It was in summer
when all tlic (lowers were in blossom
that lie was walking after his sheep
when all tit once he saw a wonderful
sky-1)1 tie flower, of a kind lie had
never seen before in all his life.
The shepherd stooped down and
broke the stem, hut just as lie was
lifting tlic flower to examine it he
snw a door in the side of the kiouu-
tnin. Now he had been over the
ground a hundred times beforo and
had never seen anything of the kind.
Yet it was a real door and it was
open. Ilelookednt the passage for
a long time and at last went in.
He found himself in a large hall lull
of chests of gold and diamonds.
There wti3 an old man with white
heard silling beside a largo tabic.
Thu shepherd was at first frightened
hut tl.e old man looked at hint with
a friendly face—and said, “Take
what you want and don’t forget the
the best.’, So tho sltephord laid the
flower on tho tahlo and filled his
pockets with gold and diamonds.
When lie had as much as he could
carry, the old man again said,
“Don’t forgot tho best.” So the
shepherd took more gold and the
lagcst diamonds lie could find and
filled ills lint till he could scarcely
stagger under the load. He was
leaving the hall when the old man
cried out, “Don’t forget the best."
He couldn’t carry any more, and
went on never mludlng. When he
reached the door in the mountain
side he heard the voice again lor the
last time, “Don’t forget the best.”
Tito next minute lie was out on
the pasture. When lie looked
around the door had vanished His
pockets and hat grew light all at
once, and instead of gold and ilia
mor.ds lie found nothing hut dry
leaves and pcblcs, He was as poor
hs ever aud all heeattsee lie had for
gotten the best—the key flower.
This is not ail fable. There are
many tilings both in the realm of
nature and of grace which we can
not obtain unless we have the key to
unlock tho. places where they tiro
deposited.
In Nature’s realm we go, as one,
Las expressed it:
“Trying with uncertain key—
Door by door of mystery.”
But in tho realm of grace the Mas-
ter Himself lias given us the keys
and invites us—yea urges us to open
the doors and supply all our needs.
lie oilers the key to the King’s
treasures—to longlife, success, hap
piness, knowledge, wisdom ami
ponce, for He says; “Seek ye first
the kingdom of God and His right
eousness, and all these things shall
ho added unto you.” Are you look
ing for the key flower or arc you
gathering thorns and briers, with
ered leaves and pebles, forgetting
the best?
The door of tho future is open
before you, Don’t forget the bust
Secure tho flower. What if you
do find thorns, the beauty and odor
will more lhau mako amends for tire
