Ail iti lepenent oaiuliilntc in the
20th senatorial district need expect
no support at the hands of the Spar
ta Islnnaelite. In its issue of the
3.1 inst, it says:
It is rumored ti nt there will he
Independent opposition to Col.

excusable folly. Democrats can't af
lord to indulge in such dangerous
nousense.
A large town is’growing up around
the shore of Lake Elsinore, Cal., a
sheet of water which is seven miles
long and three miles wide. A pe
culiarity of the town is that the
peoplego fromjstreet to street alums',
entirely by boat. In fact the
principal street of the town is ^
circular and can bo touched by bout
at any point.

Earthquake-proof buildings arc of
two kinds—those as strong as a
steel box and those built like wicker
baskets. .Many of the latter sort
are iu use in Java.
Ocean waves caused by earth
quakes are telegraphic. Those
started in Javanese waters on Aug.
27, 13, 3, were registered by tidal
gauge on the California cost the j
same day.
There are really such things ns
seismometers, of course. By means
of these delicate instruments seismic
troubles are often foretold days
ahead, but the trouble is to tell just
whore the shocks arc to be.
A most astonishing | henoinenon
ol the Javanose earthquake was the
splitting of the Papandayang
mountains. In a Basil of time it
was split into seven parts. Whore
the lone mountain had stood loomed
up seven peaks each feme 7,000 feet
high.
A capital way to discover th e
passage of earth waves is by means
of the oil in a kerosene lamp. If the
lamp be of glass and half filled with
keros.ene oil when the shock comes
ripples will be seen to advance
regularly along the surface of the
oil. These are not ripples like those
made by a jar of u building, etc
They run across the oil steadily, not
tremulously, and follow one another
with regularity. Such is a reporter’s
experience. The test was made
several times. The oil being at tl:o
level of the eye its motion is easily
seen,
sented bv this county and unani
inously nominated by the Senatorial
convention and Messrs Moye and
Evans for the House, as the nomi
nees of the people of the county.
