QUINTILLIAN SKRINE
TOE DEATH OV A PECULIAR AND RE
MARKABLE MAX.
Augusta, September 7th 1886 —
Mr. Quintilian Skrine is dead. On
yesterday morning, at his summer
home, near Hath, in this county, he
breathed his las*. At the timeol
his doHlh he was in hO seventy
eighth year. Mr. Skrine was born
ia Washington county, Georgia. He
was the son of of tin eminent physi
cian, who moved to that county, in
the first part of this century, from
Charleston. His father was a man
of letters, and of great prominence
in his profession, and of consider
able wealth in those days. Quin
tilian Skrine was a classmate of
Rubt. Toombs ami Alexander H.
Stephens, and graduated with high
honors. Hy all who knew him he
was considered the best scholar of
1 hi class, especially in mathematics.
| Mr. Toombs said that Mr. Skrine
| had as fine an analytical mind as he
: had ever seen. After leaving college
. lie commenced the practise of law
t in Sandcrsvillc Georgia, and was
i onsirlnred in a short time one of the
most erudite young lawyers in Ga.,
and did a tine practise in that
circuit. He then entered polities,
ami considered Mr, Calhoun the
gienlest statesman and certainly the
gioatcst logician ol the 19th century.
Ho was an intense admirer of Mr.
Calhoun and followed him in Ins
politics, being an extreme nnhifler.
which was unpopular iu Georgia at
that time. Mr. Skrine became dis
gusted with politics, left the bar,
retired to private life, purchased tt
plantation in Burke county Georgia,
where he removed his negroes and
became a reilusc and book-worm.
He amassed around him a magnifi
cent library of mathematical,
scientific and literary works; and up
; to the day of his death was per
I I'ect'y familiar with the clns'.cs,
! reading Greek, Latin and French
and most earnestly ask your presence,
