Prom Aug. News of the lOlli lust.
In taking a stroll through this great
emporium we were struck with
1 he sight ol the enormus display of
all kinds of dry goods piled up from
1 lie first to the third floors, embrac
ing every variety and quality from
1 lie low priced prints at three and a
halt cents to the beautiful silks, sa
tins, velvets and plushes; elegant
cloaks, jackets and dolmans for both
ladies and children* most beautiful
dress goods of every description,
from the very low priced to the finest.
Trimmings in the greatest profu
sion, embracing every thing there is
new and fashionable. It is certain
ly a treat to stroll through llr.s house
and see the many departments with
goods so tastily arranged for the ea
sy examination of customers. Mr.
Richards told us he nevoi hud a more
’beautiful assortment, and that his
prices lor the most elegant goods
'wore never so low, and it is astonish
dug to soo how low lie is selling some
'of the most beautiful and fashiona
ble dress goods.
On one side, ns you cuter the store
you find beautiful hosiery for ladies,
children and gents, merino under-
ware, corsets, gents shirts, lies, sus
penders, collars and cutis. Oil the
•opposite are luces, embroideries, trim
mings, buttons, veilings, mailings,
handkerchiefs, gloves •and rue mica
of every description. On the centre
counters are blankets’ bed spreads,
table damask, dress goods, Jersey
jackets, and other seasonable and
useful articles at bargain prices.
In tho ceiutc of the store and mi
dcr the great skylight, is the im
mense stock of dress goods; here you
can buy a dress from the low prjco
of live cents to $1,50 per yard, with
Iieautil'ul trimmings and velvets to
match. Opposite to this is the cloth
and cassimcre department, and in the
centre is the ribbon department, here
every shade and width of ribbon can
be found.
Rack of this is the department for
domestics, prints, satteens, ging
hams, wide sheetings, table linens,
towels white and red flannels’ trunks
satchels, etc. Next to this comes the
beautiful silk department with a gal
lery’ running all around and lights
coinming from above. Here will ho
found the rich and beautiful silks,
velvets, plushes and satins in all the
jiew shades and textures.
At tlie end of this is the black goods
department 111 led with all grades of
black dress good, black silks, goods
foi mourning, including crepes, eiepe
veils and nuns veiling for mourning
veils.
From the silk department is a short
fljght of steps to the cloak room.
Here are gems in beautiful jack
els, cloaks, dolmans and cloaks for
children. Every visitor to the store
should visit this department. They
will see all the latest styles ill velvet,
plush, cloth and silk wraps.
Beyojtl this is the gallery filled
with notions of all description lor
the wholesale tiade and a feeder for
the retail department. The rooms
above are exclusively for wholesale,
where merchants can lind goods
suited to their trade at prices as
low as they can buy them in New
York. The Messrs Richards tell us
their trade is considerably ahead
of last year and the outlook fora
heavy fall and winter business is
most encouraging.
There is not a more popuhfr or re
liable house for honest tradiug and
good goods at low prices in Augusta
than that of V Richards & (Jo.
They have a heavy trade all over
the country and they deserve it; their
motto is to give the best value for
the least money’.
The house was founded in Augus
ta over twenty years ago, and was
given -the name of the Fredericks
burg store in honor of the old town
by that name on the Rappahannock
river in Virginia, where Mr Rich
ards did a large and successful bus
iness before the war.
Their salesmen are gentlemen of
the first order, and are polite and
attentive to the want of customers,
whet her they wish to make purchases
or visit the house for the purpose of
examining the goods.
