Grand Jury Presentments. We, the grand jurors, selected and sworn to serve at the April term of Irwin superior court, beg leave to sub¬ mit the following presentments: We have examined the pension roil fur¬ nished us by the clerk of the superior court and iind same correct. The county school commissioner lias submitted his books for inspection as required of him bylaw, together with a complete statement of all money re¬ ceived and paid out by him, and we And the same correct. We congratulate the commissioner on the neat appearance of his books, and the manner in which same are kept. We have examined the dockets of the various justices of the peace, and notary public and ex-oflicio justices of tlie peace of the county,and find them correctly kept, except the civil docket of Drew W. Baulk, justice of the peace for 1537th district, G. M., cost bills on same not being itemised cor¬ rectly, and some not itemized at all. The civil docket of Win. B. Moore, N. P. and ex-oflicio J. P. of 1537th dis¬ trict G. M., we find cost bills not prop¬ erly itemized. We find the civil docket of S. A. Burns, formerly a J. P. for 518th district, G. M., badly kept. We find both civil and criminal docket of Thos. F. Edge, present J. P. for 518th district, G. M., incorrect and very badly kept. We And the county jail in good san¬ itary condition, and in good condition generally, except base boards on the outside, and the curbing around the pump. The court house we find in good condition except a few panes of glass needs replacing in windows. We rec¬ ommend that the county commissioner have necessary repairs made in court house and jail. We find the public roads in bad con¬ dition owing to tlie continued wet weather. We recommend that tlie county commissioner, together with the road commissioners in the differ¬ ent road districts, proceed at once to classify all public roads in tlie county, and have them worked accordingly. We find a vacancy in the office of N. P. and ex-officio J. P. in tlie 1529th district, G. M., and recommend that S. E. Coleman be appointed to fill the same. We recommend that L. J. Prescott be reappointed to fill tlie of¬ fice of N. P. and ex-officio J. P. in tlie 332d district, G. M. We recommend that county com¬ missioner build, where needed, in the various militia districts, such build¬ ings as lie may deem necessary for holding court in. We recommend that tlie county commissioner make sucli additions and changes in the court house as he thinks necessary for comfort and con¬ venience. We recommend that tlie county commissioner levy sufficient; tax to de¬ fray all current expenses of the county. We have examined the accounts of Jesse Paulk, ex-sheriff, for $48.50 and R. V. Hanley, sheriff, $3.50, and rec¬ ommend the same be paid. We have examined the accounts of M. Henderson, county commissioner, amounting to $272.95, for services rendered, and recommend that lie draw his warrant on tlie treasury for the same. In taking leave of his Honor Judge C. C. Smith, we beg to thank him for the able and impartial manner in which he has presided over our court during tlie present term. We also thank the solicitor general, Tom Eason, for courtesies extended our body during its session. Brunner’s Restaurant. I Council Proceedings. A held special April meeting 9th of 1:30 the city council All was at p. m. councilmen present except White and Lanning. Clerk read the call for special meet¬ ing. The mayor explained the the purpose of the meeting and read deed about to be executed for the property where the water-works are to be located. The mayor then read the contract which the city had made with Sidney Lascelles for the construction of water and gas works, which set out the terms, conditions, etc. The mayor then read a communication from Mr. Arthur Kit- son, of Philadelphia, the making inquiries concerning Moved city by indebtedness, pos¬ session, etc. Aidcrman Brun¬ ner that the deed be made out to Mr. Lascelles. Carried. The liquor license question was taken up and the mayor informed the council that the liquor dealers ask the city to defend their action in granting license for the sale of liquors in the city, etc. Resolution was read to have the city attorney defend the city and the liquor dealers so far as the city license for the Carried. sale of intoxicating liquor is concerned. The mayor informed the council that Mr. Schosen had asked him to pre¬ pare a form of an application for liquor license which he would apply for to-morrow. Moved by Allen that the council a journ, Carried. Fitzgerald, April 12,1897. The common council met in adjourned session Monday night. Present, the mayor, Aldermen Fockier, Allen, Mer¬ rill, Brunner, Lanning, Whitchard and Lee, also the clerk. The minutes of regular and special meeting were read and Alderman Fockier moved that the prayer of the petitioners askingpermis- sion to open W. Pine street be granted, and that the work be done under the direction of the street committee with¬ out expense to the city. Mr. Cohen asked permission to ad¬ dress the council, which was granted. He then proceeded to state that he con¬ sidered an injustice had been done him in the matter of demanding a full quar¬ ter's license for a fractional part of the same, end politely requested the return of a small portion thereof, or that credit ba given him on his next payment. Al¬ derman Merrill moved that the city at¬ torney be requested to draw up an ordi¬ nance to correct the injustice done. Motion prevailed. The petition from Mr. Cohen asking that he be allowed to remove his saloon from his present location to the corner ot Central avenue and Grant street, was read and permission granted. The council then audited and allowed all bills due for month of April. Chief DeLang addressed the council upon matters pertaining to the fire de¬ partment. Brunner Alderman moved to take the ordinance providing for the organiza¬ tion of a fire department from the table; motion prevailed. After amending the same by placing the selection of a chief in the hands of the companies, subject to confirmation by the council, the or¬ dinance was adopted and ordered printed. Alderman Brunner moved that the committee on fire department be author¬ ized to purchase a fire alarm bell at a cost not to exceed $150. Motion pre¬ vailed. The mayor reported that the two chemical engines had been received and were now in the possession of the city fire department, and that he had issued three certificates, running six, twelve and eighteen months, bearing six per cent, interest, in payment for same as per contract. The stock ordinance was amended by allowing chief of police all fees collected for the empounding of stock, was adopted and ordered printed. On motion council adjourned until Monday night, April 19. Mr. C. L. Royal, tlie tax receiver, will be here for tlie purpose of receiv¬ ing taxes on April 27th,28th and 29th. His headquarters will be at tlie Col¬ ony building. There will be a course of six free lectures delivered at tlie Christian church, commencing Sunday evening at 7:30 o’clock and continued every evening at tlie same time.
