J. G. Knapp,
To Colonists ami Citizens of Fitzgerald.
The undersigned company, having
been induced to erect an ice factory
among you, with the expectations of
tv liberal support, find, after a one
month’s experience, that the people
have not responded so we could earn
running expenses, but have given thd
bulk of their patronage to agents rep¬
resenting factories in other towns.
Some of these agents have gone so far
as to give away ice to several of our pat¬
rons. We feel that the people generally
are in sympathy with us, but our expe¬
rience shows most of the business men
are patrons of these outs ide factories.
In consequence of this situation we are
forced to ask the colonists to choose be¬
tween giving their home factory their
patronage cr the outside factories. If
the verdict is for outside institutions,
we will close and move the factory
away. If, on the other hand, we receive
the patronage of the public, we will not
take advantage of the same. We are
now trying if we can make expenses at
rales of 30, 35 and 49 cents per hundred.
If pur patronage will not justify these
prices we promise the prices will not
exceed the average prices of various
other cities having even twice the pat¬
ronage we can expect, viz: 40, 45 and 50
cents. After this we will publish in all
the weekly papers of the town a list of
the business men who patronize us,
with the hope that the colonists and
citizens will patronize and encourage
home industries. A business man who
refuses to trade at home does not de¬
serve home trade.
Lyle Ice Co.
Since writing the above, so many of
the business men of the city have began
to take our ice we feel it impossible to
get all the names together and in wishing time for
this week’s papers, not to
do anyone an injustice, until we have week. con¬
cluded to defer the list next
Lyle Ice Co.
July 29, 1897.
ColonylMembers and Citizens Fitzgerald.
We, as directors of the Colony Com¬
pany and residents of the city of Fitz¬
gerald, are given to understand that
the agents of an outside corporation
doing business at Macon, has made
statements to the effect, that they
would give away ice to the consumer,
but what they would ruin and break
up the business of the Lyle Ice Com¬
pany. The present ice war would
seem to indicate that the Acme Brew¬
ing Co. of Macon is determined to
keep their threat and ruin almost the
first manufacturing enterprise started
in our city.
The colony has given this ice com¬
pany the lands they occupy and have
promised their support: therefore we
ask citizens to stand by our home in¬
dustry, as it is simply a choice be¬
tween patronizing Macon or Fitzger¬
ald. The Lyle Ice Co. have spent sev¬
eral thousand dollars in their enter¬
prise and intend to put in bathing
pools and other improvements, if they
receive the support of the people of
Fitzgerald. They have promised us
and made statements to others that
if they can receive the support of the
citizens and business men of our city
and colony that they will hereafter
sell ice to the people of Fitzgerald at
a fair and reasonable reduction from
prices that ice sold at previous to their
starting the factory.
We, therefore ask that all citizens
and members of the colony interested
in the upbuilding of our city give their
support to this industry, and thereby
show to manufacturers and capitalists
that the people of Fitzgerald believe
in protecting their home industries.
Respectfully,
Board of Directors Colony Co.
