“Killed by her corset,*’ was the ver-
diet in the case of a lady who recently
dropped in Chicago. She laced so tight
that a blood vessel bursted. The female
who draws herself all out of shape by
this modern system of suicide ma¬
chinery, imagining that a wasp-like
waist is very taking, has less sense, to
our way of thinking, than an unbroken
mule. We don’t denounce corsets, but
only the misuse of them.

At a W. C. T. U. contest in Itchica,

contestants: I have always been a
temperance man, but after hearing
your recitation I resolve to vote the
prohibition ticket. * .
Fully ninety per cent of families
keep alcotiol in some form, either
whisky or brandy, and resort to it as a
domestic remedy for all slight or se.
vere, real or imaginary ailments. Also
that a great amount of alcohol is used
in families in the shape of patent
medicine, medicated wines, malt ex¬
tracts, tonics, tinctures, etc.
The question naturally arises: How
far the family physician is responsi¬
ble in his relations to the family as
medical adyiser for the almost uni¬
versal use of alcohol in some form as
a domestic remedy, and what is his
duty in pointing out the fact that al¬
cohol is not a cure-all, as it is sup¬
posed to be, but that it often is posi¬
tively and seriously detrimental in
diseased conditions? If these things
are true, is it not high time our white
ribboners everywhere were planting
their faith firmly in the principles of
our National temperance hospital,
which are complete annihilation to all
alcoholic remedies for the sick? The
time has come when this priiicHplo is
not simply an unproved theory, but a
demonstrated fact, well worth the
careful consideration of every house¬
hold in the world.

A well known physician says that
when fagged out by professional work,
he recruits his strength by eating
raisins, and not by drinking wine or
spirits. And I can testify to the
same, having tried it. I find raisins
are very strengthening.

Seattle, Wash., Dec. 29.—The
steamer, Alki, arrived here to-day
bringing advices from Dawson City
up to November 25. The Alki’s pas¬
sengers say there will be no starvation
at Dawson this winter or next spring.
Ueing informed of the action being
taken by the United States govern¬
ment to send a relief expedition to
that place, they said it was unneces¬
sary and uncalled for. Two thousand
men have gone from Dawson to Fort
Yukon, where they have an unlimited
supply of provisions. Those remain¬
ing at Dawson have been eating regu¬
lar meals and have enough in sight to
last well along into the spring. No
sickness is reported in Dawson and
everybody there is in good circum¬
stances and are not worrying as much
over the food situation as their friends
outside believe. The Alki’s passen¬
gers brought out, it is estimated, about
$150,000 in dust and nuggets.
