Official Organ of Fitzgerald
It is announced in the public
prints that President Taft is tired
of his job, and does not want
another term. Maybe T. R. has
given him a hint that he wants it
for lumsclf.
The registrars have been busy
this week going over the registra¬
tion list, seeking those who had
illegally registered. We under¬
stand that very few names were
stricken from the original list.
Judge E. Wall and Solicitor
Alex J. McDonald, of the City
Court, will be re-elected to their
respective offices without opposi¬
tion. It is a deserving tribute to
those two able and efficient officials.
There seems to be a lull in the
announcement, by the press, of
prospective candidates for gov¬
ernor. Guess they are all waiting
for Hoke’s decision. In the mean¬
time Governor Brown is sawing
wood and saying nothing.
President Taft has appointed
Governor Hughes, of New York,
to the Supreme court to succeed
Justice Brewer, deceased, and
Gov. Hughes has signified his ac¬
ceptance. This appointment puts
a good strong man on the supreme
court bench.
As will be seen in our news
columns probably fifty per cent of
the cotton planted in Georgia has
been killed by the cold, frosty,
snowy weather; and as cotton seed
is hardly to be had for re-planting,
a very serious condition is now con¬
fronting the farmers of the state.
The Cotton Seed Crushers’ Asso¬
ciation of Georgia, realizing the
gravity of the situation, has noti-
lied every mill to stop crushing
and hold the seed for re-planting.
Next Wednesday is the day for
our county primary, and all the
candidates for county offices are
quite busy. Under the ruling of
the executive committee a candi¬
date, to be nominated, must re¬
ceive a majority of all the votes
cast. Where a nomination is not
made the two receiving the largest
number of votes, will run again in
the August primary. Under this
ruling it is very likely that a
second race will be necessary to
declare the nominees for several
of the offices. The secret ballot
system was also adopted by the
committee. This action on the
part of the committee is highly
commendable.
Mr, E. H. Wilkerson, represent¬
ing the American Woman’s League
has shown us the plans and speci¬
fications of a$5,000 Chapter house,
erected by the League. It would
be an ornament, and of great bene-
tit, to auy town. But Fitzgerald
is going after the $10,000 Chapter
house, and there is every reason to
uelieve she will get it. The local
League already has about thirty
members, and it takes only
hundred members to get the $10,-
000 house, and it is well furnished
and maintained by the American
League without one cent cost to
the local members. The advant-
ages to our citizens of the Chapter
house would be many. All public
spirited citizens should take an
interest in the League, and there¬
by secure this great boon for Fitz¬
gerald.

The Census
It behooves every citizen to as¬
sist the census enumerator in
every way possible that we may
have a full and complete enumera¬
tion. It is believed by many that
the census of 1000 did not do Fitz¬
gerald justice, — that she was en¬
titled to a much larger popu’ation
than was given her. In order
that this may not occur this time,
let every one help the enumera¬
tors in every way possible. These
men are gentlemen, and ask only
the questions required by the gov¬
ernment. These questions are not
at all embarrassing and can be
readily answered by all. So when
the enumerator calls at your home
receive him cordially, and give
him all tliQ information he is seek¬
ing. The following are the enum¬
erators for Fitzgerald and Hen
Hill county:
Geo. W. Brown, City of Fitz¬
gerald, Wards 1 and -1.
N. B. Andrews, City of Fitzger¬
ald, Wards 2 und 3, Whites only.
W. M. Fuller, City of Fitzger¬
ald, Wards 2 and 3, negroes only.
C. C. Ball, Ashton District.
,1. W. Pearson, Bowen’s Mill
District.
M. II. Plopper, Fitzgerald Dis¬
trict excluding Fitzgerald City.
,1. H. Taylor, Williamson’s and
Vaughn Districts.
M. P. Reviere, Dickson’s Mill
District.
The enumeration is progressing
linely and will be completed easily
within the specified time, May
15th.
Supervisor G. E. Ricker re¬
ports every enumerator in his dis¬
trict, doing excellent work, and
apparently having no ^trouble
worth mentio n ng.
NOTICE
If you are living in the 1st or
