^ierly Gold
\es
r citizens is now
in Navada, visiting the wonderful
gold mines of Kimberly, it may
not be amiss to giv r e your readers
a few facts touching this new dis¬
covery of untold wealth.
Nevada is almost twice as large
as Georgia, but her population is
but little more than double that of
Ben Hill County. Owing to its
mountains and hills and scarcity of
rains and water courses, n t much
of the soil is adapted, or devoted
to agriculture. The Kimberly
gold mines are of recent discovery,
and it is interesting to know how
they were found.
Out there are thousands of acres
of government lands. Upon cer-
tain conditions any man can occu¬
py or own there. The govern¬
ment will grant you either a
mineral right, or a surface right,
or will issue you a patent to claims
giving you a free simple title.
Wherever water courses are
found, are sheep and cattle ranches.
The Hum Bolt river, and other
streams, furnish an abundant sup¬
ply of water to Kimberly and the
surrounding country.
It so happened that the govern¬
ment granted a surface right for
grazing purposes to two Danish
sheep herders. One day their eyes
fell upon some suspicious looking
rocks, and they began to investi¬
gate. Within two or three days,
with a hammer, frying pan and
water they procured $2000 worth of
gold. One of them got on a “jag”
and the news began to spread.
He let the cat out of the Wallet.
Like wild %e the news flashed
over the country, and miners,
visitors and capitalists began to
flock to Kimberly.
It is claimed that the richest
gold mines ever discovered are at
Kimberly. They say they have
found a whole mountain of gold.
The beauty of it is, Mr. Editor,

that the most, of this srreat weali
belongs to Uncle Sam, and no on
man can gobble it up. You or 1
or any of your readers can go ou
to Nevada and get a slice. But,
a las! I am left out. It is too fai
t° walk, and 1 have neither a
donkey, nor the railroad fare,
A claim is 20 acres. Any one
who will, may go to Nevada, and
stake oft' a claim and survey it and,
have it registered, and it is his al¬
ways, provided be will do
worth of work on it annually.
Or, if he prefers, he can pay the
government $5 per acre for as
many claims as he takes up, and
the government will issue him a
patent to them, in other words, a
fee simple title. At present there
is a great rush to Kimberly. Peo¬
ple are flocking there from Cali¬
fornia, Colorada, Alaska, Michi¬
gan, Wisconsin, Illinois, New
York and other states. Miners,
capitalists, newspaper men, rail¬
road officials, all classes, rich and
poor.
Until the fall of 1909, Kimberly
was unknown, and without a
name, but the rich Kimberly
diamond fields of Africa suggest¬
ed a name.
It is located 18 miles off the
Southern division of the Main
Pacific railroad. Battle Mountain
is the railroad station. A man
can take a pullman car, at San
Francisco, or Chicago, anil in a
day, and less, get off at Battle
Mountain to Kimberly, he can get
automobile or hack service, or go
on foot, or horseback. About
half the distance is a valley road,
the balance an inclined plane.
Capitalists are already planning
to construct an electric line from
Battle Mountain to Kimberly. A
townsite has been laid out,and nego¬
tiations are under way for water
works and electric lights. Houses
are not going up fast enough to
accommodate the crowds rushing to
Kimberly. Hotel accommodations
are insufficient. People are living
in cloth tents, mud huts and shacks,
Four lots in lirst ward from

■ lid uy of them had

improvise other arrangments.
I came to Fitzgerald before it
had a name, and representing the
.'aw firm of King and Anderson,
ari 'Atlanta law firm, and Gov
Northern, I obtained the charter
for the old Colony Company.
I saw the village of Swan, in
the fall of I8 c if) and but a number
of the "N<£v comers,” some of
whom wer> making dwelling
houses out of their wagons. It
was fay privilege, on the same
visit, to assist in revival services
in the old Methodist church. The
congregations were exposed of
the villagers, the fcfome seekers
and the people combined in the
rural districts. Fitzgerald is in¬
deed a magic city, and she ip yet
in her swaddling clothes.
Nevada is the richest gold pro¬
ducing state in America, and the
Kimberly districts contain the
largest and richest deposits of
gold yet found in Nevada. You
will get some conception of the
enormous output of Nevada gold
and silver by consulting the New
York World Almanac.
The statistics in the Almauacjof
1909 show a yield of $364.00 in
gold, and over $493.00 in] silver,
per capitla, based on the census of
1900, a total yield per capital, in
one year, of more than $800.00.
It is wonderful to contemplate,
almost impossible to conceive, that
any section of the globe, can pro¬
duce over $800.00 worth of gold
and silver, per annum, to every
man, woman and child within its
boundries.
This is a case where fact is
stronger than fiction.
