Mayor Sweat Killed
In Avito Wreck
Just as we go to press, the city
is plunged into grief by the sud¬
death of Mayor Frank L.
who was killed by the col¬
lision of a passenger train with an
automobile, iri which he was a pas¬
Mayor Sweat and Mr. Tom
Price wer 1 passengers in Mr.
Price’s car. and ms the car was go¬
ing over the Georgia AL Florida
crossing below the A. B. <£ A., it
was struck by the incoming north
bound passenger from Madison.
The engineer had cut off his
stearn a few yards above prepara¬
tory to slow down for the crossing
of the two roads but was then go¬
ing at a rate of 20 miles per hour
when the engine stuck the rear
wheels of the car. Mr. Price was
thrown several yards and the en¬
gine carried the car together with
Mr. Sweat for about 7f> yards be¬
fore it came to a stop. Mr. Sweat
received the fatal blow at the time
the engine struck the car, it mak¬
ing a long gash behind his ear. He
lived about 20 minutes after he was
taken to the hospital, He lost
consciousness at the time of the
accident, rally ing once on the hos¬
pital, when he asked: “How much
further is it?’"
Mr. Price’s injuries will not
prove fatal although he is now con¬
fined to his bed. and the death of
Mr. Sweat is kept a secret from
him.
It seems that the gentlemen were
busily engaged in a conversation
and were upon the crossing before
they were aware of it. and the ap
proach of the train did not attract
their attention until it was too late.
The death of Mr. Sweat takes
from our midst one of our fore¬
most citizens. At this hour the
whole city is in sadness as is plain¬
ly seen in the face of every indi¬
vidual.
Particulars of the funeral have
not been given out by the family
at the hour of going to press.—
