World’s United
BretKren Day
Next Sunday (Jan, 8.) will be
observed as, “World's United
Brethren Day”, by all United
Churches in this country, and in
Africa, China, Japan, Porto Rico
and the Philippine Islands, where
the Church is operating Missions.
In view of the fact that the
church is not well known in this
part of our great Country, it may
not be out of place for me to say a
few things for the benefit of any
who may desire a better acquain¬
tance with us.
In the Eighteenth century it
pleased God to awaken persons in
different parts of the world, who
should raise up the Christian re¬
ligion from its fallen state and
preach the gospel in its purity.
About the middle of said cen¬
tury. the Lord, in mercy remem¬
bered the Germans in America,
who, being scattered in this exten¬
sive country, seldom had the priv¬
ilege of hearing the gospel in their
own language.
Among others He raised up
William Otterbein and Martin Bo¬
ehm in Pennsylvania ahd George
A. Guething in Maryland, armed
them with spirit, grace and
strength to labor in this neglected
field, and to call among the Ger¬
mans in America, sinners to le-
pentance.
The labors of these men were
blessed of God and they established
many good societies and led many
souls to Christ,
Other laborers were added to
these from time to time, as the
field of their operation was en¬
larged.
A conference of these workers
was held in Baltimore Md. and
1789, S. C.
The necessity of a closer union
between these laborers and soci¬
eties soon became evident, for
some had been Presbyterians or
German Reformed, some Luther¬
ans and others Mennonites.
They, accordingly, called a con¬
ference to be held Sept, 25, 1800,
at the home of Peter Kemp in
Frederick Co., Md. At this
conference the denomination was
formally organized and William
Otterbein and Martin Boehm were
elected Bishops.
In faith the church is Evangeli¬
cal and in doctrine Armenian rath¬
er than Calvinistic, though accept¬
ing much of both systems where
they do not conflict. In policy and
government the chv| ch is purely
American and congregational; the
final appeal being to the people in
all matters of importance.
A program for the day has been
prepared for use in the' Sunday
Schools from which the following
are cited.
no 6. responsive reading
Leader: By whom and when
was the United Brethren Church
founded?
School: By Phillip William Ot¬
terbein. The Church was formal¬
ly organized in 1800.
Leader: Who was Otterbein?
School: An educated, godly,
German preacher, who came to
America when a young man as a
missionary.
Leader: How did our Church
name originate?
School: From the expression
“We are brethren” addressed by
Otterbein to Martin Boehm, after
a sermon preached by the latter in
the now famous Isaac Long barn
near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Leader: What lead Otterbein
to exclaim, “We are brethren”?
School: He rejoiced to hear
Boehm’s spiritual message, show¬
ing his assurance of salvation.
Leader: What truth united Ot¬
terbein, Boehm, and others in the
beginnings of our Church?
School: It was the joy of the
assurance of salvation in the con¬
sciousness of their sins.
Leader: What progress has the
United Brethren Church made in
the hundred and ten years of its
existance?
School: Jfrom a little group of
humble it has to a
church of 285,000 members, with
2,000 preachers and missionaries,
and extensive publication, educa¬
tional and missionary organiza¬
tions.
Leader: Who organized the
first United Brethren Sunday
school?
School: Dr. .JohnG. Pfeimmer
organized the first Sunday school
in the church at Corydon, Indiana,
in 1824.
Leader : IIow does the United
Brethern Church rank in Sunday-
school work?
School: In proportion to mem¬
bership it is not surpassed by any
denomination We have 3,480
Sunday schools, with 39,780 teach¬
ers and officers. In the organized
adult Bible class work we are in
the lead with 1,700 classes organ¬
ized. There are 10,000 students
in Teacher Training classes, and
more than 1,400 have been grad¬
uated. Closely allied to the Sun¬
day schools are 2,054 Young Peo¬
ple’s societies, Senior and .Junior,
with 84,620 members.
Leader: What was our Sunday-
school enrollment January, 1910?
School: 352,555.
Leader: Have we grown any
during the past year?
School: There has been an in¬
crease of over twenty-five thou¬
sand, making the total for 1911,
over 377,000.
Leader: What is our Church
membership at the present time?
School: About 285.000.
Leader: You will see that there
are about a hundred thousand more
persons enrolled in the Sunday
school than in the Church.
What is our duty to the scholars
in our school who are not members
of the Church?
School: We vvpuld seek to have
them decide for Christ and become
members of the Church this year.
