Parcel Post In The Orient.
While we are gravely discuss¬
ing the advisability of making
certain innovations in this country,
they are going right ahead in the
Philippines, and doing things.
Word has been received by the
Council-General at Hongkong
that the Manila Government has
put in effect parcel post arrange¬
ment with Hongkong. It is in¬
tended to extend this pdicy to
other colonial establishments in
the Orient.
The parcel post is a popular
institution in many countries now
in France even the Aarkel gard-
ners are sending their product to
market by means of it. Congress
is wrestling with the subject, and
it is making the committee on
Postoffice and Postroads gray and
careworn.— Ex.
This Government has also com¬
pleted arrangements for a parcel
post between the United States
and Venezulla. The rate per pound
is 8c. and 11 pounds may be in¬
cluded in one package. This same
arrangement has been made with
most of the European countries as
well, so that a citizen of Fitzger¬
ald may send a package of Mdse,
almost to the end of the world
weighing 11 pounds through the
mail, but if one desires to send
a parcel to your next door neigh¬
bor through the mail, it must not
weigh more than 4 pounds and the
rate is 10c. per pound. We have
used this illustration before, many
years, we use it this time to reach
the intelligence of our readers, to
urge them to write Dudley M.
Hughes, our Congressman, and
A. O. Bacon and .Joseph EL Terrell
our U. S.(Senators at Washington
D. C. and urge them to vote for
the extension of the parcel post
Inw to apply to inter-state postage.
We are pleased to learn of a
radical departure from previous
custom in the office of the county
treasurer. Air. Jolly, on his own
nitiative has asked and received
bids for the deposit of county
moneys and awarded the same
to the First National Bank at 2 per
cent on daily balances, which
amount will come to the county and
go along wavs towards (paying the
commissions to the treasurer.
the, past, both in Irwin aud Ben
Hill Counties there was never an
effort made to save the county this
interest and though some of the
treasurers may have received some
compensation from their deposi¬
tories. yet the county did not get
the benefit from it. We congratu-
lat- Mr. Jolly upon his line start
in the Treasurer's office and :vro
sure the people of Ben Hill Coun-
ty will appreciate his efforts
their behalf.
Hr. J. B. Soanor sent the Lea-
tier an Vduitional check for 8.') for
the Ashton School fund, which we
forwarded to Mr. Wesley Walker,
trustee of the rebuilding fund.
We shall gladly forward any ad¬
ditional donation that may be
handed to us for the rebuilding
of the Academy.
