Churchwell Stores
Are Consolidated
An interesting announcement in
the business world has been made-
by Messrs. A. F. Churchwell, of
Albany, and .J. H. Churchwell,
of Cordele. who have formed a
co-partnership and will conduct
their six retail stores under the
firm name of Churchwell’s.
In addition to the six retail stores
which will be operated by these
two brothers, a l>trge whole¬
sale dry goods business, will be
established at Cordele. This will
give the new firm thriving retail
stores at Albany, Cordele, Way-
cross, Fitzgerald, Tifton and .Syl¬
vester and a big wholesale house
at Cordele.
For several years past the Messrs
Churchwell have,been jointly inter¬
ested in several of these Church¬
well stores, but Mr. A. F. Church-
well was the sole proprietor of the
Albany store and Mr. J. H.
Churchwell was the sole owner of
the Cordele store. As the busi¬
ness of all the stores grew and de¬
veloped, it was found that a com¬
plete merging of the large interests
of the two brothers was desirable.
The details of the partnership were
worked out during the fall and the
partnership was begun on January
first. The first announcement of
the details is just now being made.
The chain of Churchwell stores,
backed by a wholesale business in
Cordele, is one of the finest evi¬
dences of the success that will
crown judicious management and
hard work in business. The com¬
bined retail business of these six
stores amounted last year to more
than $400,000, and the brothers
are confident that it will reach the
half million dollar mark this year.
This in itself is a splendid enter¬
prise, but to this is being added a
big wholesale business, now being
will begin with two
men and a largely stock-
and efficiently equipped busi-
It is interesting in considering
big business interprise, which
represented in six of the lead¬
South Georgia towns, to take
peep in the bnsiness history of
men who have developed this
Churchwell business. Mr. A.
Churchwell began business in
in 1897 with a capital of
$250. By careful manage¬
and hard work, and contin¬
advertising, he made his busi¬
ti success from the very day
opened his doors. In three
he felt that he could improve
prospects by going to a larger

that his business slogan, “Church-

Churchwell moved his business into
the Davis-Exchange Bank building,
where he now operates one of the
largest I t nnil and mnst most nnmilnr popular retail retail
establishments in the city.
The success of Mr. .J. H.
Churchwell, of Cordele, has been
no less unusual. He began his
business career in McRae in 1895
with a cash capital of only $100.
In a few years he was looking toy
a larger held in which to
his conspicuous talents, so he lo-
cated his bigger store iji Cordele.
Since the establishment of the J.
H. Churchwell store in Cordele
has been one of the leading stores
of that prosperous little city and
now ranks among;the most success¬
ful retail establishments in the
state.
Mr. -J. H. Churchwell will be in
charge of the wholesale business
which the new fivtn is establish-
ing, while Mr. A. F. Churchwell
will have active direction of the
chain of retail stores. The same
policies ' which halve been used in
their past successes will be con¬
tinued with renewed efforts and
justified faith—hustling and adver¬
tising.
The Messrs Churchwell are
native South Georgians. They
were raised at Brookfield, in
Berrien, now Tift county. They
are conspicuous examples of pro¬
gressive South Georgia business
men, and the entire section is
gratified at their success and proud
of lishing their accomplishments section’s commercial in estab¬
this
supremacy.—Albany Herald.
