Veterans Denounce
Civil War Histories
Little Kock, Ark., May 17.—In
scathing terms the historical com¬
mittee of the United Confederate
reteraDS today denounced certain
histories covering the period of
the Civil war, characterizing as
“unfair and unfortunate.” m anner
in which the South’s attitude in the
war of 1861 is net out. They urge
a boycott at all such texts, The
report was unanimously adopted.
The committee on resolutions
criticised certain camps of veter-
for taking part in political
demonstrations. The committee on
Battle Abbey, the #200,000 me-
norm I structure being erected at
Richmond, Va., reported that it
would be completed for dedication
id 1912.
The report of the credentials
committee showed 2,321 accredited
dolegates.
Texas and Georgia are leading a
hard tight this afternoon for the
location of the next reunion. Jack¬
sonville, Fla., Macon, Ga.. Hous¬
ton, Tex., and Chattanooga, Tenn.,
are contesting. Officers will also
be elected this afternoon. General
George W. Gordon, commander-
in chief, is not a candidate for re-
election, owing to enfeebled
health.
Georgia veterans organized more
new camps during the past fiscal
year than auy other state, accord¬
ing to the annual report of Adju¬
tant General William E. Mickle to
the reunion today. Eight new
samps were formed in the state,
Texas coming next with five. Of
the 1,183 camps on the roster 127
are in Georgia. Texas alone ex¬
seeds Georgia, having 212. Miss¬
issippi ranks third with 89.
General Mickle singled out a
Georgian as the only one to receive
special praise, his report contain-
og the following:
“The efforts of one man stand
out so conspicious and his labors
have been exerted for so many
7 «i»rs and conducted so unremit¬
tingly, efficiently aud zealously,
that it would be unjust not to men¬
tion him. As commander of his
9*nip, as brigadiei general and as
major general of the Georgia divi¬
sion, General John H. Martin has
set all.an example that is worthy
oLthe highest commendation and
most faithful emulation. He ev-
er studies those things that make
For the good of the association, and
his divison has organized more new
oamps and had more ‘slumbering
lamps’ revived than any other, and
J»ey pay more promply and regu¬
larly. All praise to Geueral Mar¬
tin and the camps of the Georgia
division!”
The report contains statistical ta¬
bles of numbers of camps by state
diu.-wns and financial summaries.
