D; B. Moll Writes
of Electrical ShocH
June 15 th, 1911.
Tfie BRLgerald Leader,
Fit .gerald, Ga.
GenL. men: I am at a loss to
mow w at to write about this
week. I havent formulated aDy
jartic ’ar subject to write on, al-
houg I have had experiences,
•;uiet r . exciting, of a personal
jaturc- Perhaps you have seen
n the Atlanta Constitution where
I got a: electrical sivock by a bolt
of iigi iL ng which struck the Flag
Pole •: i top of the House < )i!ice
Build: _ at half past six o'clock
on tiie evening of the 15th. inst. I
iarrov’y escaped being killed, and
t was porteo by someone that I
was dt-a :. but I told them I was
he ch -t lively corpse they had
ever r:.u across. I was thankful
t was . worse than it was.
I have ust had Mrs. Will Howe
and so:.. Lewis, and Mrs. J. B.
Seanorand son to see me and I
was glad to see them. They call¬
ed on me one evening and I made
a date for the next morning at
nine o'clock, and we proceeded to
n 'o out sight-seeing. We first
went to the Washington Monu¬
ment, and after taking our places
n line, waited twenty minutes be-
ore we went up in the elevator
about 550 feet. We had a good
view of the Patomac and the
city of Washington, and we locat¬
ed most Government buildings
; rom the national Hags that ily on
these buildings every day. There
re about fifty of these buildings.
We then went to the Engraving
iureau, where all the green backs
nd bonds are printed. The small¬
est bill printed is One Dollar, and
the larg st Ten Thousand. The
argest bond printed is Fifty
rbousar. J do liar s. They work
bout three hundred hands in the
building and print from three to
five million dollars in currency per
ay. They run about one hundred
end fifty presses. From there we
went to the Smithsonian Institute,
which contains a collection of all
the birds in the world, from the
argest to the smallest one, also a
collection of all the different sea
.-.nimals. To look at this collection,
i seen.s impossible that living
creatures should have grown in
,jch peculiar shapes. Nature tak¬
en in all its phases is indeed a
most wonderful study. They also
have all the animal specieson ex¬
hibition, the reptiles of every d~
,'Cription, and many of the insects.
The figures of all the Nationalities
:.ro on exhibition, too. I could
have given a more detailed account
i f I had not left my note book at
borne.
The United States Wireless
Telegraph Station is only a short
distance from the House Office
Building and I visited it to-day
s. nd had the operations explained
to me, but I can’t give you but
t. ttle about it. It takes a great
real of machinery to throw out the
force in the elements to carry the
wireless message. They turn on
what is called a Spark that throws
cut twenty thousand volts, which
volts are thrown out in space,
caught in the waves and carried
:-,s far as the force will take it. If
there is an instrument in opera-
t.on, it will catch the message.
These messages are thrown out
while the sparker is sending out
twenty thousand volts. They send
dispatches from- here to Jackson¬
ville and Tallahassee, Fla.
My friend, Dudley M. Hughes,
has gotton several letters, asking
him to take care of ‘‘Friend Muil”
which he says he can do, just so
long as he can keep me sober. Of
course everybody in Fitzgerald
knows what a toper I am. Any¬
how I’m glad to know that I have
some friends in Fitzgerald who
are interested in my welfare. I am
getting along all O. K., am well
pleased with my situation. I ex¬
pect to be at home in September
ns L wish to wind up all my busi¬
ness and move to Washington.
Think my chances are good to be
here for several years, if I don't
get a job in the South. Yours,
D. B. Mull.
