Arkansas Swamps
Will Be Dro-ined
Memphis Tenn., Jan., 4.—One
of the most gigantic drainage pro¬
jects ever undertaken in the Seeth
has been an non need by the Mor¬
gan Engineering Cora paay of this
city. It involves strakes lands in
Northeastern Arkansas, supposed
to have been caused by earthquake
about 100 years ago. About S00
square miles are included in the
almost 200,000 acres.
The contract, which will be let
January 25, calls for the construc¬
tion of 300 miles of ditches, 280
miles of which will be forty to fifty
feet wide and ten to fifteen feet
deep. The main ditch will be fifty-
five miles long. Surplus water will
be led into tbe St. Francis and
Tyronza Rivers. The reclamation
will cost about $1,500,000. The
same seism.c disturbance which
sunk tbe property is thought to
have created the Reel Foot Lake.

Death Sentence for
Ex-Minister
Boston, Jan. 8.—-Broken in
spirit, weak in body, and profess¬
ing the deepest remorse, tbe Rev.
C. V. T. Rieheson. late pastor of
Emmanuel Baptist church, Cam¬
bridge. is expected to go before
the Suffolk county superior court
next week after his plea of guilty
to the indictment charging him
murder by poison of Avis
of Hyannis. option
While the court has no
but to pass sentence of death,
counsel for Rieheson hope that
the fact that the confessioa of
guilty will save the county large
-ums, protect innocent persons
from embarrassing experiences on
the witness stand, and suppress
much testimony prejudicial to pub¬
lic morals, will have weight with
the Governor and executive coun¬
cil when a petition for commuta¬
tion of the death penalty comes
before them.
Rieheson was about to be taken
from Charles street jail to the su¬
perior court today,to change his
plea from not guiltp to guilty of
wilfully murdering his former
sweetheart, Avis Linnell, his
jailors were notified that his coun¬
sel couid not be present, and the
accused clergyman need not ap¬
pear until tomorrow.
Even if Rieheson pleads gu : lty
to the first degree indictment to¬
morrow, it is expected that sen¬
tence to the electric, chair will not
be pronounced for a week or two
and that the governor and counsel
will finally decide his fate.
The Lyric Theatre has for to
night and tomorrow night special
attractions which is well worth
your time and money.
