Americans to cat i ice. declares F.
N. Barrett, food expert and editor
of the American Grocer.
Mr. Barrett says the supply of
rice u ample for all demands, is
much cheaper and a more nutri¬

Cooper Will Oppose
Bewrtlett in Sixth
__
Macon, Ga.,—There will be a
new element in the race for con-
gress in the Sixth congressional
district next fad. John K. Cooper
yesterday made known his inten¬
tion to enter the race for that po¬
sition. The statement of Mr.
Cooper was made informally and
he says that his formal announcc-
will come out in the course
of two or three days.
Mr. Cooper does not know just
at present what sort of a campaign
he will make. ;4L’ may hivite his
opponent, Charles L. Bartlett, to
stump the district with him, out
he is not decided at this early date
on any course of action. He is
optimistic as to his chances, and
says that he thinks he has many
friends in the Sixth district who
will come over to his side.
Hog cholera is the greatest ob¬
stacle to successful hog raising.
Lack of feed may cause more loss¬
es in the South than cholera, but
an abundance of feed can be pro¬
duced cheaply by any one who
wants it, while even the most in-
tclligent management will not al¬
ways protect against cholera. If
cholera is in your neighbor’s herd
do not wait until it breaks out in
yours before having your hogs
treated with the anti-cholera
'Cru m. Or if it breaks out in
your own herd take the well ones
to new quarters where no hogs

secure the serum from some com-

Seven Albany Saloon
Men Get Cold Feet
Albany, Jan. 10.— Only *igh-
teen of the twenty-seven prospec¬
tive near-beer dealers who made
applications for license at the first
meeting of the 1912 council “came
across” with the necessary $200
cash and $300 bond at last night's
meeting of council and thus se¬
cured the license for which thev
had applied. It is understood that
the other nine applicants decided
that there would not be any roon-
ev in the business with so many
competitors, especially in view of
tne belligerent attitude of the new
mayor, H. A. Tarver, and the po-
lice commission against whiskey
selling in near-beer saloons. In
spite of this, however, two more
applicants were received and ap¬
proved last nigi J, and when these
pay the license tax and make the
required bond, there will be at
least twenty near-beer saloons id
the city.
The enforcement of the new
near-beer ordinance, especially as
regards to screens, stained win¬
dows and other obstructions to a
full view of the interior of such
places, is as rigid as it can be
made. Some of the near beer sa¬
loons, after removing the screens
from their counters and washing
the stain from their front windows,
failed to tear down the partitions
to small rooms in the rear Mayor
Tarver instructed the chief of po¬
lice to have these partitions re¬
moved, and it is said intimations
were made that they would come
down even if policemen had to use
axes.
Some of the near-beer saloons,
which are conducted in connection
with small grocery stores, were
found to have large piles of flour
sacks, barrels and other obstruc¬
tions. so placed that they obscurred
a full view of the near-beer coun¬
ter from the sidewalk.
Tnis also is a violation of the city
ordinance, and the flour sacks had
to come down.
Election Bet Upheld by
U» S. Supreme Court
Washington, Jan. 10.—B. T.
Collier, ot Gadsden, Ala. has
been assured by the supreme court
of the United States that an elec¬
tion bet won by him eight years
ago is really his.
Collier and Thomas L. Johnson
in 1904 had a bet of $750 on the
primary elections in Etowah coun¬
ty, Ala. Collier won and Johnson
paid him the $750, it is alleged.
After Johnson died his executors
sued (’oilier to recover the $750
on the ground that it was a wager.
Judgment was given against Col¬
lier, but when the sheriff south!
to levy on Collier’s restaurant fur¬
nishings, Collier claimed the ben¬
efit of a bankruptcy exemption.
Later Collier recovered a judgment
of $2,100 damages against the
sheriff and executor because the
exemption was not recognized.
The supreme court of Alabama
affirmed the judgment for dam-
»b r es. bo did the United States
supreme court.
