For Congressman.
“To the Voters of the Third
congressional District: I have th<
ambition to represent the Third
district in congress. As to my
fitness and worthiness, I propose
to submit that to the voters of the
district, along with the other gen¬
tlemen who may* aspire to the
honor, in a democratic primary.
“I am a farmer, was born and
cared on a farm in this district,
and have contributed all that I
possibly could to the advancement
of the farming interests of my
section of the country.
“As a member of congress I
would be controlled largely by the
same desires and purposes that
have actuated me as a private
citizen in of advancing the farming
interest the state nd country,
which ultimately is the interest of
every person, whether merchant,
lawyer, doctor, following banker, other mechanic
or citizens callings.
“I shall be glad to meet the vo¬
ters face to face in every county
of the district before the day of
election. Sincerely,
John R. Mercer.

Joe Hill Hall Will
Open Campaign Soon
Macon, Ga,, March 8.— Hon. Joe
Hall, of Macon, has announced
that he will begin his campaign for
governor at Knoxville, Ga., his old
home, March 18, and from that
date until the primary he will make
the hardest fight of his career to
be elected. ‘You can say forme,’
he stated to a press reptesentative,
“that I am in the race, regardless
of who else may enter. I will
open my campaign at Knoxville,
Crawford county, on Monday,
March 18, and my reason for mak¬
ing my first speech there is be¬
cause that is my boyhood home.
“In my opening speech I will
declare the principles on which I
stand. My next speech will be
made at Eatonton on Tuesday and
on Thursday 1 will speak at Cov¬
ington.
He stated that he was daily re¬
ceiving encouragements and was
confident that he would win out.
Home Mcv.de Lice
Powder
It may seem a little early to be¬
gin talking about lice in the poul¬
try house, but my experience has
taught me that the best way to get
rid of lice is not to get them. It
won’t be long no.v betore these
parasites will begin working and
squirming by the millions, and
woe unto the poultryman who lets
them get a good hold. Many of
the seed and poultry supply houses
are advertising ready-made pre¬
parations, and perhaps some read¬
ers have already patronized them.
These ready-made preparations
are nearly all good, but I wish to
give herewith a little home-made-
formula that I have tried and
found excellent. Anybody can
make it, though the two principal
ingredients (gasoline and carbolic
acid) are very dangerous. Care
must be exercised to keep the
gasoline from the tire, and the acid,
as everybody knows, is a deadly
poison Here is the formula:
“Threeparts of gasoline, one
part crude carbolic acid. Mix
thoroughly and stir into all the
plaster of paris it will take up. It
is a good plan to put the liquid
mixture in a sprinkling can and
pour over the plaster of paris,
stirring at the same time. By
doing this, the powder will not
cake. When dry, the powder will
be a brownish in and
have a very strong odor of carbolic
acid and gasoline. Dust fowls
thoroughly for body lice and es¬
pecially the sitting hens.”—J. A.
Martin, in The Progressive Far¬
mer.
