From Perry To Jacksonvilie The Waycross scout cars for the initial inspection of the ‘‘short route” are scheduled to arrive in the city Wednesday afternoon on Dec. Ist and will be accompanied to Perry by some of the local good road advocates, to join Commissioner Anderson and his party at Perry on the 2nd for the tour to Jacksonville. At Hawkinsville and Abbeville a number of cars will join the tourists and come on down to Fitzger ald where lun%fivill be served. The cars will goto Waycross via Ocilla agd Douglas, local officials attaching themselves to the party along the route. The night will be spent in Waycross, the guests ot the Waycross Chamber of Commerce. Friday the trip will be made into Jacksonville via Folkston, : | Fully fifty cars are expected to make the trip and a decision is expected from the commissioners. President Bowen of the ““‘Short Route” Association has sent out the following invitation to the county and city officials in the territory and several responses have already} been received. k | My Dear Sir: ; . } At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce in Wayecross, Gg.,! after due and carefulf consideration, it was decided that it would be a wise and proper thing tu do at this time to promote and stimulate a further interest in the Short Route of the proposed East Dixie High way which will run from Perry, Ga., via Hawkinsville, Abbeville, Fitzgerald, Ocilla, Douglas, Waycross, Folkston, Callahan, to Jack sonville, Fla., that an inspection tour be made through these counties and cities on December2nd and 3rd; that the inspection tour should start at Perry, Ga,, on the morning of the 2nd, and that the parties would join them in each county and county seat they passed through along the route, and make such a schedule as would suit them so as to reach Waycross on the afternoon of the 19th and spend the night there, leaving on the morning of the 3rd, and going into Jacksonville that afternoon and spending the night there, I believe this movement to be one that will greatly promote and stimulate interest in our proposed route, and as President of the Dixie Highway Short Route Association, I do hereby declare and designate December 2-3 as official Inspection Days of the different roads through their respective counties of the Dixie Highway Short Route to Florida. I do especially Insist and urge that the County Commissioners and the County Superintendents of each County, and the Mayors and other City officials jand Chambers of Commerce of each City through which we shall pass, and also all other good roads advocates take notice of this declaration and join in this inspection Blankets, Comforts! ' We have this fight for the East Dixie Highway practically won, and it will now depend on the quality of road from Waycross to Jack sonville in comparison to the road from Savannah to Jacksouville, in our final success of being named official route of the East Dixie ‘High way, yhet me urge your hearty cooperation in making this inspection tour a great success, and - succeed in our laudable undertaking. It does mean so much to our section of country to have this Highway finally and officially named through it, We can succeed, WE MUST succeed in our undertaking. Fleming of the county com missioners, reported today that Beaver Dam bridge, covering whatis regarded as one of the worst parts of the proposed Dixie Highway through this section, has been finished and is now open to the publie. The bridge is in Pierce county. The road through Pierce will be finish ed during the next ten days. Efforts have been made for years to bave a bridge built at Beaver Dam without success, The (Georgia Short Route Association 'got busy on the matter and through their work the bridges needed im Pierce have been constructed. Chairman Fleming is ‘higrbly pleased that tte Pierce county link is so near being perfected and is satisfied that-the other eounties will have all objectxbnéble pieces of road mtip= top shape before the Georgia Dixie Highway commissioners u.e ready to make their final inspection trip of the several routes between Macon. and Jacksonville. f ; .
