K’ ED AND OTHER MATTERS
DISCUSSED.
Some thirty-five Rotarians met at
the city hall on invitation of the or
'ganizing committee, Messrs. Griner,
Thurmond and J. D. Dorminey, who
had prepared an oyster roast for their
gulests. . Hon.- L. L. ,Griner, “boss
P 'oéfte’r"’ for Fitzgerald, took:«charge of
the meeting in the absence of the
temporary chairman, J. C. Brewer and
invited expressions from the member
ship on the scope, name and purpose
of an organization such as was need
ed in the city and one which would be
capable of doing the most good to
most of the psople. A number of
sgggestions( were made, all agreeing
on one poim*,ugpecially, that was, that
the limited system of the Ro
rarians was not ‘{xactly practical in
the srsiller cities. 'On motion of Mr,
Griner, Mr. L. . Tisdel was elected
<temporary chairman with L. C. Mont
~ague as tempori*ty sé¥etary. Mr. L.
N. Geldert of the State Chamber of
Commerce was called upon to pre
sent his “Factsabout Georgia,” an ad
vertising sché&’%’ to circulate through
out the country along with the exhi
bition cars. A committee consisting
of Mr, W. R. Bowen, L. C. Monta
gue and L. L. Griner, was appointed
to co-operate with Mr. Geldert and se
cure space for the city and county.
A motion to go into permanent or
ganization met th some objection
and a committee was- appointed in
stead to secure 'a larger number of
representative citizens for a meeting
to be held later. The Dixie Highway
inspection tour on March 20th, will be
the next big event for Fitzoerald and
the organization pledged itself to make
March 20th a day long to be remem
bered. Messrs. Bowen, Thurmond,
Griner Denmark and Gelders were ap

COMMUNITY FESTIVAL TREE
MAKES “CITY BEAUTIFUL”
~ As chairman of th civic committee
of the D.. A. R. Mrs. R, A. Mann has
given unstintingly of her time and her
untiring efforts towards helping to
make Fitzgerald the “city beautiful.”
Last summer the grounds of the
courthouse were beautiful evidence of
committee’s work. For some time she
has ben working faithfully for the
planting of a Community Festival
Tree in the center of our town and at
last her unceasingly and untiring ef
forts have been crowned with success,
for the tree is planted. To dig up a
large tree, place it in a frame work on
a wagon in such a way as not to mar
its beauty, énd haul it the long dis
tannce of eight miles from Mr, Rea
son Whitley’s farm near Ocilla, was
a tremendous task, but when the pub
lic spirited men of Fitzgerald get in
terested, things “do move”, even trees.
The following gentlemen gave Mrs.
Majors their loyal support and made
her dream for a \‘community tree”
come true. Mayor Paulk, McCarty-
Johnstone., Messors, W. R. Bowen, P.
P. Booker, C. Patterson, J. C. Glover,
Lawrence Glover, Reason Whitley, E.
T, James, E. N. Davis, R. E. Toee 1.
O. Tisdel, L. Gelders and J. B. Seanor.
Special gratitude is due Mr. Whit
ley for the gift of the tree and the
following gentlemen for their hard la
bor in uprooting it and bringing it in:
Messrs. P. R. Booker, C. Patterson, J.
C. Glover, Lawrence Glover, J, B. Ber
ry and Reason Whitley.

and authorized to call the next meet
ing. Mr. Griner announced the Oy
ster Roast ready and the chair was
unable to any further interest the
crowd, so adjournment was had to the
city hall park where oyster enough for
a regiment awaited the club.. The af
fair was a credit to its promoter, Mr.
L. L. Griner and everybody felt in
debted to him for his untiring efforts
to “make things go.”

s The foregoing report was submitted'to the
" Board of Directors of The Exchange National Bank
at Its monthly meeting held Feb. 24th, 1916.
We do not recall that we have ever seen a
report of any bank in South Georgia of our capital
stock size having so much cash and exchange and
soo much deposits, so much surplus, so much undi- '
‘ vided profits and such small overdrafts, as is
shown above. - } ; e
Our short comment on this statement is this, -
It 1s REMARKABLE, indeed, and shows RE- -
MARKABLE SIGNS of UNUSUAL STRENGTH and PREPARED
