SCHOOL GIRLS PIN FLOWERS ON HIGHWAY COMMISSIONERS
IN FIT ZGERALD.
The Dixie Highway Commissioners
after a three hours’ executive session
last Saturday at the Dempsey hotel at
Macon, place a third link of the Dixie
Highway in Georgia on the map, by
creating the Central Route, via Fitz
‘gerald, having given Savannah the tit
le of being on the Eastern Route.
Neither route having been perfected,
it became a matter of promises for the
future which largely swayed the com
missioners, Savannah, with her cus
tomary liberality of promises, under
taking to bridge the St. Marys and Sa
tilla rivers and making the trestle ov
er the Altamaha swamps accessible
both day and nignt. The “short
‘route” with its handicap in-Florida of
‘unfinished work, received the title of
"“Thc Central Route,” with equal dig
nity, if there ig any left in the Dixie
Highway movement, with either of
the other two routes through the
State.
It now becomes the duty of the
counties through which this route pas
ses to assist Charlton county to hard
surface her eighteen miles of road dur
ing the year, and as an effort will be
made to attach the part of Pierce
county, which is being traversed by
the Dixie, to Ware county, we have
no doubt that when the travel south
begins in the Fall the automobiles‘
will find the Central Route nea(ger‘
completion than either f her competi
tors and will secure the travel.
The labor involved in getting the
recognition as a National Road has
been great, numbers of public spirited
men all along the line have given of
their time and money to the project,
and although we had to share the lau
rel with Savannah, the greéat bene
fits of the roads through this terri
tory will solely be shared with the
And Press
folks at home. The practical results
are for all, and the glory of the cause
was only the ambititon of the few.
“On to Macon,” became the battle
cry Friday and from every hamlet and
city on the “Short Route” from Charl
ton to Bibb, representative citizens as
sembled at Macon to be at the finale.
When the Dixie Highway Commis
sioners began to arrive at the Hotel
Dempsey, Col. Jep. McDonald, of
Douglas, with his chorus of singers
from the “Short Route” greeted the
arrival with songénd cheers until the
lobby of the hotel began to remind one
