What One Drink
Does To You
In the April American magazine is
an article by Dr. Edwin F. Bowers
who stateg that scientific experiments
have conclusively proved that a rela
tively small amount of alcohol will
lower muscular energy seven per cent,
accuracy seven per cent, response to
colors and impressions thirteen per
cent, diminishing also the vision for
four or five hours.
“Sending blood to the head, where
it surges through the brain with in
creased velocity, is not increased vig
or,” says Dr. Bowers, “but increased
irritation, which comes just before an
aesthesia and dimunition of power.
The drinker deludes himself, for he
only thinks he is thinking. His very
first drink has produced a definite
measureable degree of intoxication.
HARRIS-HARDMAN RACE
GROWING IN INTEREST.
Atlanta, March 25 —The friends of
Governor Nat. E. Harrig have laid
hold of the statement accredited to
Dr. L. G. Hardmap in his Cuthbert
speech favoring a four year term for
governor, and are insisting that Hard
man’s actions in trying to deny the
incumbent a second term and force
him aut of office in disrgard of pre
cedent at the end of the' first two
years, are widely at variance with his
words.
In his speech at Cuthbert, Dr,
Hardman was quoted as saying that
he would support biennial sessions,
and that further more he saw no rea
son_why the governor shouldn’t be
named for four years, and pointed
out the advantages to be gained by
the way of knowledge and experience
by a man holding office long enough
to get familiar with its every detail
before the time came around for him
to get busy in another campaign.
Governor Harris’ friends say that
that Dr. Hardman’s line of reasoning
is splendid, but that in the light of it
they can't vanderstand his trying to
oust the present governor to make a
place for hinrself.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS.
The so-called moonlight school was
introduced into Georgia primarily to
eliminate illiteracy from among adults
and t is having that result. For ex
ample, in Worth county, three schoolg
1 in six communities with
137 white pupils. One-fourth of these
men and women and younger people
who could not read or. write -a-few
weeks ago can now do both, and so
they are more valuable as citizens,
can get far more pleasure out of liv
ing, are worth more either ag work
ers for others or for themselves, and
altogether are better men and women,
boys and girls, It is safe to say that
every one of them, especially those
who have lived longest without ability
to read and write, would not sell their
new accomplishments, if they could
for a good round swum.
But the moonlight school may not
disappear even after there are no
more adult illiterates; it may develop
from a school for teaching reading and
writing into an opportunity for teach
ing better citizenship, Tor discussing
‘means of improving the community
for meetngs a: which everybody who
ateends them will be both teacher and
pupil, giving information to others
and gettng informatiom from them.
Community meetings, especially in the i
more sparsely settled places, are a
good thing. They arouse interest in
matters of public interest, tend to
educate the people into the ways of
progress, would surely help the cause
of good roads, of improved farming,'
of school betterment. Nobody is too !
old roo wtse to learn something by‘
having such talks with his neighbors.
