(STEWART F. GELDERS, Editor)
In th matter of the cause of
I'itz-111's defeat at Cordele, let
us get at the root of the matter.
It hardly takes an efficiency
expert to find the cause of our
lack of success. In the first place
the school is concerned directly
only "in the failures in the two
essays and the spelling. We have
no instructor in expression or
music, and all training for those
three contests is done for our
scheol by private teachers. Most
of the other schools of our size
have instructors in music and ex
pression. As this is the only
branch in which we are surpass
ed by any schools, why can’t we
have this long needed improve
ment?
E'p to about five years ago an
instructor in both of these
branches was employed for the
whole school, and with very grat
ifying results. An efficient teach
er could be employed for the
High School and Junior High
School only at an expense which
would certainly be very small
compared " with jthe results. It
may be said that private instruc
tion 1s just as good. AR E&xe
pression teacher is an invaluable
adjunct to the Literary Club.
An expression teacher is an in
valuable adjunct to the Literary
Club.
- Now to consider the essays and
spelling. In spelling no kick
whatsoever can be made concern
ing the general instruction of the
whole of the student body. Since
shortly after Christmas the spell
ing lessons in the eighth and
ninth grade classes have been
taken out of the High Fchoo!,
Bulletin from which the contest
words were partially selected.
About six weeks before the con
testan order was given for some
of the spelling text books from
which the words were to be main
ly selected. This order is still
unfilled but a book was obtained
one week before the contest. Of
course this was toolate for any
real studying by our contestants.
The other towns had had their
entrants working most of the
year.
In the essays, very little prepa
ration was made. The contest
ants started studying about one
month before the contest and
classes were held about five
times to help the entrants study.
In our rival high schools, espec
ially the two who won the first
places, the contestants had been
at work all year and most of the
four classics were studied in the
regular English classes. Here
none of the four, considered some
of the best classics in literature,
were studied in class.
A number of students in our
school considered the inefficiency
of the judges the main cause of
our being slaughtered.
This brief resume may help to
show other reasons for our de-

Washington, April 20—Despite
the admitted gravity of the inter
national situation, so fas as the
United States and Germany are
concerned, sources close to Presi
dent Wilson today for the first
time in a week expressed hopes
that a diplomatic break, with its
consequent danger of war yet
will be avoided. The Berlin For

utterly opposed to an open break

Some of the leading officials
there are understood to have pre

the submarine campaign for the

is declared to have been more
than offset by the loss of Ger

MOQOTHER AND BABY HURT
IN TRAIN-AUTO CRASH
Moultrie, Ga., April 19.—Mrs.
Emma Barnes and her year-old
baby were both perhaps fatally
injured, and Timothy Barnes was
seriously hurt, when an automo
bile in which they were riding
was crashed into by the rear end
of a freight train here this after
noon. J. T. Barnes, the driver of
the car,, and Tellie Barnes, two
years old, the other occupants of
the machine, received minor in
juries.
Mrs. Barnes and the little baby
were hurled twenty feet down the
track, and her skull was fractur
ed. She also received internal in
juries. The baby was also hurt
internally.
Tellie Barnes, the little boy,
was thrown. nearly thirty feet
from the wreck. 1 \
leaders, but not a single one of
them would say for publication
where the information came
from. There was no disguising
the fact, however, that it was
considered reliable and that it
had materially relieved the over
night tension.
