OLD SETTLER’S PICNIC
A day of pleasure was the old
Settler’s Picnic. The day was
ideal and at an early hour people
were wending their way to the
Blue and Gray Park with well fill
cd baskets, anticipating and re
alizing a day of pleasure at meet
ing old friends in social inter
course, ;
At 12 o’clock sharp dinner was
spread on the tables by the nim
ble hands of the ladies, and such
a dinner was seldom seen or ex
celled at a picnic or any other
place. It was great. I wish to
state here that the ladies of the
Fitzgerald Colony are unappro
‘achable in their tact to prepare a
dinner. After dinner the speech
es were made, Mr. L. O. Tisdel,
‘Toastmaster, who opened the ball
with a neat and telling speech,
and was followed by Mr. Monroe,
of Abbeville, one of the promoters
of the colony, associated with Ex-
Governor Northera and Mr. P. H.
Fitzgerald in locating and pur
chasing the land for the colony.
Mr. Monroe was thoroughly post
ed and gave some very interest
ing reminiscences of the early
days of the colony which were
enjoyd by all.
Other speeches were made by
Mr. Brunner, Mr. Justice, Mr.
Haverfield, Uncle Jake Schroll,
Mr. Hill, and Mrs. Fox, all inter
esting, eloquent and bearing on
the subject of the colony days, of
which they were all members,
The speeches were interspersed
with songs by a fine quartette un
der the direction of Mrs.M. 3
Green,
At the close of the meeting it
