INMAN KILLED EV
ERY FOUR HOURS
. &Cleveland, 0., June :.—A state
ment issued by the Railroad
Trangportation Brotherhoods’
shows that freight train employ
es have one of the most hazar
dous of all occupations.
Raih‘oadhl officials lay much
stress on the statement, that “I 8
per cent of all railroad employes
now receive 28 per cent of the
total wages paid.”
This claim means nothing
whatever, because it fails to take
into consideration the - years of
preparation for the job, and the
fact that the line between life and
death is so thin, that when a train
employe le#aves on his run, he is
mever sure when he will return.
The last annual report of the
Interstate Commerce commission
shows that a trainman is kiled on
an average of every four hours
and forty minutes, and a man
crippled every 3 minutes and 30
seconds. And this does not tell
all the story, because if a man
,aoes not die from his injuries
within twenty-four hours he is
not reported to the commission
as: killed, and unless the injury
disables him for three days he is
not counted as injured.

LONGSHOREMEN STRIKE
ON THE WESTERN COAST
San Francisco, June 2—A strike
of 9,ooo.longshoremen employed
at Pacific coast ports went into
Eeffect dutomatically at. 6 p. m. to
lday. At Seattle, where strike
breakers have been hired, trouble
is expected. Two thousand men
are out there. Elsewhere appar
ently the employers have made no
preparations for active resistance.
For several days at least it is
predicted that most of the deep
sea and coastwise shipping = af
fected will be tied up. Owners
|of several fast coast passenger
{steamers have announced, how
]e\'er, that these wessels will be
continued in operation, giving up
‘if necessary, all freight traffic.
Neither employers nor strikers
showed any inclination to budge
from their stands. The water
fronts employers’ union of Seat
tle, San Francisto, Tacoma, Port
land, and San Diego announced
that they would not accede to the
demands of the longshoremen. At
a .mass meeting here last night a
committee from the Water Front
Workers federation notified the
longshoremen that the federation,
which is composed of virtually
every union engaged in water
front work, would support them
in their fight.
The strikers demand a flat rate
of 35 cents an hour, the present
rate being 50 cents, and over time
of $1 an hour. :
Vessels stevedored by deck
hands, such as coasting limber
schooners, will not be affected by
the strike, ‘but scores aof big
ocean-going steamers are expect
ed to be seriously handicapped.
In San Francisco 4,000 men are
concerned in the strike order.

MOVEMENT TO ABOLISH
BOOL ROOMS IN ATLANTA
Atlanta, Ga., Jume 5.—A fhove
ment teo abolish all pool rooms in
Atlanta has been launched by a
number of council members, and
bids fait to sweep the cushions
and the green baize tables off the
map. Inspection by the police
has pretty well established that
the pool rooms. are loafing places
for vagrants, and some are sus
pected of being the rendezvous of
crooks and yeggmen. Since the
new prohibition laws went into ef
fect the police have been waging
refentless war on vagrants as well
as blind tigers, and there is a
strong sentiment against the pool
tooms on the ground that they are
an obstacle in the way of the an
ti-vagrancy campaign.
