NEW RECORD 15 MADE
gk
UN THE DIXIE HIGHWAY
ATLANTA - JACKSONVILLE
COURSE WAS COVERED
IN ELEVEN HOURS AND
FIFTY-NINE MINUTES.
Jacksonville, Fla., July I.—All
automobile records between At
lanta and Jacksonvilie were brok
en today by Leman Phelan and
Homer C. George. They drove
the 355 miles between Atlanta and
Jacksonville 'in eleven hours and
fifty-nine minutes, being checked
out of Atlanta by newspaper men
and policemen and checked in
Jacksonville by three newspaper
men representing the big local
dailies.
The run was the most sensa
tional made in many months, the
last fifty miles being driven in a
downpour of rain through mud
and slush while eighty miles of
sand were traversed between
Waycross and Jacksonville,
Phietan drave from Atlanta to
Hawkinsville while George drove
from Hawkinsville to Jackson
ville.
Checked Out at 3:45 a. m.
Phelan-was checked out of At-
Janta at 3:45 o'clock this morn
ing. He arrived -at Hawkins
ville at 8:30, - after having one
puncture en route. George took
the wheel at Hawkinsville after a
losg of filteen minutes. Five miles
from Douglas the dar had a blow
out and Douglas was made on a
flat tire. Previously a puncture
had stopped the car outside of
Fitzgerald. Forty-five minutes
were lost at Douglas where new
tubes were bought and placed in
two tires.
A heavy rain began falling
shortly after Waycross was pass
ed and from that city to Jackson
ville the roads were sloppy and
full of water. The crew arrived
here covered with mid and soak
ing with water at 3:44 o’cloek.
The new record lowers the old
record which was unofficially
made in fourteen hours and thir
ty-five minutes. Considering the
weather conditions the record is
phenomenal. '

PATRIOTISM :
A Good Poem to Reread on This
. Fourth of July
By Sir Walter Scott
Breathes there the man with soul
so dead
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land;
Wihosz heart hath ne'er within
him burned,
As home his footsteps he hath
turned
From wandering on a foreign
strand?
If such there breath&, go, mark
him well..
For bim no rlnistrel raptures
swell;
High though hic titles, proud his
name,
Boundless his wealth as wish can
claim,
Despite those titles, power and
pelf,
The wretch, concentered all in
self,
Living, shall forfeit fair renown
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust from whence he
sprung, ;
Unwept, unhonored and unsung.
