Rid Hens of Lice and Mites
—_— |
(Wm. 8. DILTS, Poultry Department,
Ga State College Of Agriculture.)
Each year the profits of the farmer
and poul/tryman are clipped by the at
tacks of these parasites. Hens infest
ed with lice will i lay as many eggs
as those Kept free from them. Young
chicks will not grow as fast and often
die from dttacks of these parasites.
The sitting hen should be dusted at
least three times "during the hatch
with a good insect powder. You can
make the following powder at home:
Take 3 parts of gasoline and 1 part
of 90-95 per cent crude carbolic acid or
the same amount of cresol or zeno
leum. Mix well, then stir in enough
plaster of paris to take up the mois
ture, making a dry powder. Keep the
powder in a closed oan for use,
The lice hide in the fluff feathers
round the vent, in under the wings,
on the top of the head, and on the
thigh feathers. Apply the powder
particularly well Jdn these parts, see
ing that it penetrates well, Provide
the hens with a wallow of fine .-dust
and they will try to rid themselves of
the lice. ;
Mites work on the fowls at night,
hiding in clusters in cracks and crev
ices, on the perches and in the nests
during the day. They suck the blood
of the birds they are on during the
night, and, when full, have a red color.
At other times they are a yellowish
white color.
~ You can rid your houses of mites
by thoroughly cleaning the house and
spraying all parts with 1 part of crude
carbolic acid or a good coal-tar disin
fectant to forty or fifty parts of water.
A kerosene emulsion may.be used if
; used more often. One part of kerosene
o fifteen to twenty parts of water will
be effective. Be sure to cover the nest,
roosts and cracks tn the wall well with
this spray, as it must come in contact
with the mites to be effective.

MEXICAN ATTITUDE DE
FIANT; MEMORANDUM
CHARGES BAD FAITH
Mexico City July 30.—The for
eign office today issued a memor
andum in reply to Secretary Lan
sing’s recent note, in which the
correctness of assertions in the
communication from Washington
‘were repeatedly™ denied. The
memorandum declares” that the
United States had no right to
maintain its armed forces on
Mexican soil. . .
The ' memrorandum contains
thirty-five counts.. Although not
in the form of a direct reply to the
Washington note it is considered
equivalent to an answer to that
document. It expresses surprise
that the Washington government
should have been pained at the
tone and the contents of the Car
ranza document, since it main
tains that the United States has
sent to the constitutional govern
ment not only one, but many dis
courteous and even over-bearing
notes.
Emphatically reiterating the
Mexican government’s position
denying the right of the United
States to keep armed bodies in
Mexico, the memorandum denies
energetically that the Mexican
government had protected band
its who had committed depreda
tions in the United States and de
fies Washington to produce proof
of the assertion.
- Blame for the Santa Ysabel
massacre was placed on the so
called impulsive and irascible dis
position of Charles Watson, gen
eral manager of the Cusihuiriachi
Company, and Gen. Scott and
Gen. Fanston are accused of bad
faith and lack of honor in mis
leading Gen. Obregon in an al
leged evasive reply regarding the
crossing of American troops into
Mexico after the Glenn Springs
rad . :
The note concluded by declar
ing that the presence of American
troops in Mexico invites rather
than prevents bandit raids along
the border.
The memorandum was issued
at the same time that the Foreign
Office authorized publication of
Secretary Lansing’s note.

LOOKING FOR THE
SUPER SUBMARINE
The submarine carrying a car
go of dyestuffs and medicine
chiefly asperin, much needed in
this country, sailed from some
German port about June 14 and
has been sighted near Norfolk,
MR
The vessel carries no torpedo,
it is said, and is armed in no way,
#though carrying a periscope for
observations. Under the rules of
international warfare she is en
titled to the same protection as a
vessel of any other nation, while
in American waters, officials of
the Savannah custom house stat
ed, provided that she is not arm
ed, and will be entitled to take
back with her a cargo, just as do
the vessels of the Allies.
It is. understood that the capa
city of the submarine is 500 tons
and that he is divided into four
compartments. According to in
formation considered reliable, the
undersea merchantman sailed
from either Bremen or Hamburg
on June 14. Nothing has since
been heard of her. Though an
undersea craft, the vessel is said
she would only submerge when
floating as other vessels, hence
she woul only submerge when
danger threatened.
