COTTON READY TO PICK
Bainbridge, Ga., July 18—Cot
ton picking will begin within a
few days in Decatur county.
Nearly every one who planted
cotton this year has tried to rush
the staple to an early maturity
in order to get ahead of the boll
weevil. Early maturing varities
have been planted and the culti
vation has been hastened to pro
duce a staple that would open by
the middle of July.
County Agent Lewis, who is
from Louisiana and <onversant
with boll weevil conditions, says
that no real damage need be ex
pected before the middle of Au
gust. At this rate most of the
cotton in Decatur will have been
picked. Farmers in the western
portion of the county are making
preparations to begin the latter
part of this week.

THE LEADER ENTERP RISE AND PRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 21. 1916
SHIPS TO STOP AT QUAR
ANTINE TO PERMIT IN
QUIRY TO BE MADE
Savannah, Ga., July 19.—A1l
passengers leaving New York, es
pecially those coming from
Brooklyn, by boat to Savannah
will be given a medical examina
tion as they board the ship or as
they land in Savannah, states Dr.
Brunner, health officer of Savan
nah.
No Chance of Spreading.
This measure is taken in order
that there will be no possible
chance of infantile paralysis
spreading to Savannah. This dis
ease now has New York and the
city’s different boroughs in its
grip, and is rapidly spreading to
the different states. This action
resulted from a wire being sent
by Dr. Brunner to Acting Sur
geon-General | Arthur Glennan,
who is in New York, requesting
that some measure be framed that
will help towards insuring Savan
nah against infantile paralysis.
Wire Names
All persons boarding trains for
Savannah will be noted by United
States health officials in New
York and their names will be im
mediately wired to Dr. Brunner.,
The local health officer will place
these persons under medieal oh
servation upon their arrival, Sey
eral New Yorkers now in the city
are already under observation.
Infantile paralysis has already
spread to. Tennessee, and two
cases are reported in Georgia, one
in Augusta and another in Athens.
These patients have been prompt
ly reported to the health authori
ties there and have been isolated.
Take Every Precaution
While the danger of the discase
spreading to Savannah is not very
great, it can spread to this city
just as well as to Augusta and
other points in the South. Dr.
Brunner is taking every possible
action towards the lessening of
the danger. The co-operation of
the people of Savannah is asked
by the health officer in keeping
the city just as clean as possible.
Effective Today
Dr. Lindley, the quarantine doc
tor, this morning rececived orders
from Washington to stop all
ships from New York and make
a rigid examination of passengers
to determine whether any of them
have brought with them infantile
paralysis.
The order goes into effect to
day and henceforth all ships put
ting in at quarantine, in addition
to being examined according to
the regular rules, will be observed
for symptoms of infantile paraly-
WHAT TO PLANT WHERE
CROPS WERE DESTROYED
Athens, Gz, July 15~ Numes
ous inguiries coming to the Geor
gia State of College of Agricul
tural about what to plant where
floods have ruined crops has led
President Andrew M. Soule, of
the College of Agriculture, to is
sie a statement to the press. He
urges that farmers make immedi
ate preparations to re-plant the
flooded areas. Ample time re
mains to grow a good crop of hay
or forage and in some parts of the
state a crop of grain as well.
President Soule says: “One of
the best crops to seed this late in
the year is foxtail millet, of which
there are several varieties. Com
mon foxtail, German, Hungarian,
and Siberian, all do well in this
state. Two pecks to an acre is
the amount usually sown.
“Another good forage cfop that
can be produced is a combination
of Early Amber sorghum and an
early maturing variety of cow
peas make a good planting mix
ture.
“A number of early maturing
varieties of soy beans, such as
Acme, Itosan yellow, Hollybrook
and Wilson which are excellent
varieties for late seeding. From 1
to 11-2 bushels are required for
broadcasting.
“A quick-maturing variety of
corn, such as is grown further
north, will probably have time to
mature in most sections. Hickory
King is an excellent variety. '
“Turnips and late Irish pota
toes can be grown. If there is no
ready market for turntps they can
be fed to stock to advantage.”

To the Voters of the Third Con
gressional District of Georgia:
I hereby announce my candida

ional District of Georgia, to the
Sixty-fifth Congress, subject to
the primary to be held September,
12, 1916, and respectfully solicit
your support to this position. If
nominated and elected, I pledge
myself and the best energies I am
capable of exerting to your every
interest, and especially to procure
for yous
I.—The co-operation of the Nat
ional government with the several
states in the enforcement of their
prohibition laws to the extent of
denying application for license to
manufacture or sell intoxicating
liquers in such states, and the
procurement of such necessary
changes as will prohibit the ship
ment of intoxicating liquors in
prohibited territory; and will
earncstly advocate every legal
measure that will tend to procure
for the whole people National
Prohibtion.
2—l will support such rural
credit legislation as will actually
give to the farmers of our country
the relief that has been so often
promised, by making available to
them, with good security on land
or cotton, long loans of money at
low rates of interest, such loans to
be made directly by the govern
ment to the farmers.
3—l will favor a sufficiently
equipped army and navy to com
mand peace at home and respect
abroad, and the manufacture of
our navy and army equipment by
the government.
4—The restriction of immigra

in a legal way.
5—A complete separation of all

I purpose to conduct my cam

alone.
My campaign headquarters will
