EPISCOPALIANS SPLIT !
, a
| OVER NEGRO BISHOPS |
' Joint Commission of Clergy and
| Laymen Fails to Reach
; Agreement
g New York, September 4—A
joint commission of clergy and
l]aymen appointed at the last tri
ennial general convention of the
ll’rotestant Episcopal church to
consider the proposal to have ne
gro bishops at large to supervise
negro church, has failed to agree
and has prepared two opposing
reports for the next general con
vention, beginning October & at
St. Louis. l
The majority report recom
mends the establishment of a sep
arate racial district for negroes in
the south, relieving bishops of
southern diocese of further juris
diction over the thousands of ne
gro members of the church and
the election and consecration of
a negro bishop or negro bishops
at large.
The minority report recom
mends instead that some southern
|diocesc soon wi'l take advantage
of its present right, according to
the canons of the church, to elect
a negro suffragan bishop to serve
under the white bishop of the dio
cese.
i The dissenting report suggests
that the system proposed by the
lmajority will inevitably tend to
i weaken in the white man the sen
i se of responsibility for the negro.
