The First Requisite.
( Two-year-old Tom was out for a
walk with mother. ‘l'hey met a small
»oy of about same age. He was very
nteresting to Tom, because of the
pan’s size hat he was wearing,
Mother said: “Well, shall we buy you
t hat like that, Tom?’ Small Tom
ronsidered a while and then said:
‘No, I ought to have long pants first”
“Charm” for Lovers.
A bellef in “charms” still exists in
Peakland. In the chimney of an old
cottage was recently found a dried
pig’s heart stuck full of thorus, a relic
of the belbef that if a Jilted lover
stuck pins or thorns into a pig’s heart
he would cause much pain to his faith
less sweetheart.—London Mail.

Value of Youthful Thinking.
We are learning that the fabled
foundation af youth lies in ourselves;
I 8 in our own mentality. Perpetual re
Juvenation and renewal are possible
through right thinking. We look as
old as we think and feel, because
thought and feeling maintain or change
our appearance in exact accordance
with their persistence or their vark
ations. It is impossible to appear
youthful and remain young unless we
teel young. Youthful thinking should
be a life habit.—Orison Swett Marder
In Chicago Daily News.
Saving the Tin,
After trying many other processes of
recovering tin from old cans there is
now, according to La Nature (Paris), a
return to the old-fashioned method of
boiling the scraps (well cleaned) in g
solution containing an excess of free
alkali and saltpeter. The tin is recov
ered as crystals of stannate of soda
and the alkali apd saltpeter can be
used over and over again,

rtecord Geneological Tree,
A Spanish nobleman, the Count of
Orca, has a genealogicai tree complete
in every branch from Noah downward.
A golden ark figures in the family
escutcheon, and the count maintains
that his title commemorates the sery
fces rendered to humanity by his an
cestor at the time of the Deéluge.

Advertising Talks
(No. 2) B
: (Augusta Chronicle.) "..
NHE Philadelphia Record, in a recent issue, makes a strong
point in favor of advertising, by saying that the merchant
who doesn’t advertise, “Advertises in a negative sort of way,
for he is not a wide-awake, progressive merchant.” -
The Philadelphia paper, is undoubtedly right, as most mer
. chants will testify, and more so at the present time than at any gther
for while there is a decided tendency to watch, and even curtail, the
expenditure of the family income, it is an undisputed fact that the
normal life of the family calls for a judicious amount of buying and
selling, and the more thrifty the housewife, the more careful she is
to study the advertisements in her daily newspaper to see where she
can get the best value for her money. ; :
The best merchants have learned too, that it isn’t the spasmodic
advertising which pays,best, but the oft-repeated, hammered-in
kind, if they have anything worth while to offer, which makes the
purchaser learn to watch for his advertisement and hence yields
him the best results.
