“Mary” the play which is said to be
dearest to the heart of Geo. M. Co
han, is beyond doubt his most joyous
’ contribution to the stage. That is to
be presented at thie Grand Theatre,
Thursday night, comes as a refresh
ing message. This delightful at
traction is surpassing all engagements
yet received this year in point of box
office receipts. In “Mary” Otto Har
bach visualizes a few delightful chap
ters in the life of a young western
‘ girl who comes east to carve out her
own career and whose sudden en
‘trance into the social swirl is the
great sensation of a Long Island sea
son. The ensuing romance between
Mary and the son of a leader in the
exclusive set is a merry episode and
is told to much clever dancing, and
many song numbers. The latter are
by Frank Mandel, whose lyrics have
been enjoyable features of recent
prominent productions, and with the
work of Mr, Harbach and Mr. Man
del the music furnished by Lou Hirsch
is in perfect sentimental accord, Mr,
Cohan in selecting his cast for Mary
has once more inscribed himself as a
past master in this difficult branch of
stage production, and no more ster
ling list of names has been seen on a
yogramme in many years than that
disclosed in this delightful musical
comedy, while the best singing and
dancing chorus of youth, beauty and
charm ever assembled is a highly
important feature,
