“Influence” a Drawback.
Influence is the worst handicap any
younz man can have, It tends to
make him feel he need not exert him
self to his full capacity, and has a bad
effect upon him. When other work
mcn learn that one of their number
has a pull with somebody higher up,
they look at him askance and the ef
fect upon these other men is bad.
Then the foreman, or whoever he is,
will either show him undue favors and
push him into a position for which
he is not fitted. or, if the boss is of a
different stamp, he will hesitate to
promote him even when he deserves
it, because the boss knows the other
will think it is a case of favoritism.
The effect, therefore, is bad upon the
whole organization. When any young
engineer or college graduate or any
body else comes to me asking for a
letter to enable him to get a job at
our works I say to him just what I
have said here.—John D. Ryan, pres
ident Anaconda Copper company, in
Forbes Maguazine.
Medical Value of the Ant.
Those who have heen given formie
acid as a medical remedy will be in
terested in-its history. The ancient
aqua magnanimitatis contained an ex
tract of ants. In 1822 Berzelius first
prepared formic acid in the laboratory,
and soon after it was introduced into
medical practice, although it had be
come quite obsolete in the latter half
of the Nineteenth century. But of
late years there has been a slight
tendency to make use of formic acid
and formates in heart disease. This
is an odd coincidence, for the old mag
nanimitatis received its name from its
supposed power to exalt the courage,
The formula of the aqua called for two
pounds of ants, three pounds of alco
hol, and about 100 grams of spices,
the mixture being distilled. But it
had been announced as far back as
1901 that the acid had some virtues
In psoriasis (a skin disease) and gout.
Not for Modern Manhattan.
Before the English flag flew over
Manhattan an old Dutch ordinance di
rected the burgomasters to demand
from every house money for the pur
pose of ordering from the mother
country leather fire buckets, fire lad
ders and fire hooks, “and g¢nee a year,
to demand for every chimney one guild
er for the support and maintenance of
the same.” This ordinance states in
its preamble that, “In all well-regu
lated cities and corporations 1t ils cus
tomary that fire bhuckets, ladders and
hooks are in readiness at the corners
of the streets, and in public houses
for the time of need.” Imagine the
_modern Manhattan so equipped!
Buckets hung on Broadway corners
would in number run a close second
to the bulbs on its electric signs.
Factors of Muscular Strength.
Current discussions on the relative
productiveness of labor lend addition
al interest to the results of tests re
cently conducted by a Western scien
tist to determine the effects of outside
influences on muscular strength. Cli
matic factors are found important, a
continuous temperature of more than
86 degrees Fahrenheit being unfavor
able to performance, while between 70
and 80 per cent humidity is favorable,
Excessive fatigue carries its effects
over to the following day, and even
longer. A curious discovery is that a
number of men engaged on a specific
task of hard labor become of practi
cally equal strength. Close applica
tion and unpleasant surroundings
have a definite fatigue effect.—Popu
lar Mechanics Magazine,
Playgrounds.
The history of the public’s awaken
ing in the United States to the need
of providing special facilities for
child play is a comparatively brief
but most happy one. Children have al
ways played wherever they found
themselves and with whatever mater
ials were at hand, but it was not un
til the latter part of the nineteenth
century that it was recognized that
backyards, alleys and crowded city
streets, railroad tracks, fire escapes
and roofs were not' adequate centers
for child activity. New England gen
erally, and Massachusetts particular
ly, has taken the leading part in this
movement.
Journeys on the Nile.
The scenery of the Nile scarcely
changes from day to day in its form
and colors, but only in the disposition
with regard to each other. Every new
scene is the turn of kaleidoscope in
which- the same objects are grouped
in other relations, yet always charac
terized by the most perfect harmony.
Either from the pure atmosphere,
the healthy lives we lead, or the ac
cordant tone of our spirits, we find
ourselves unusually sensitive to all the
slightest touches, the most minute
rays of that grace and harmony which
bathe every landscape in cloudless
sunshine.—Bayard Taylor.
Unique Marker in Maine.
Within ter minutes’ automobile ride
from Eastport, Me., erected on the side
of the country road at North Perry, is
a unique granite marker indicating the
halfway distance between the equator
and the North pole, having been erect
ed some years ago by government offi
cizls who enjoved summer vacations
in this frontier section, close to the
banks of the border river, St. Croix,
and within 4 mile of the Dominien
shores. The stone would not he ob
served by many unless the spot were
known.

Important Medical Discovery.
Great possibilities have been sug
gested by the method of making new
blood discovered by Dr. W. J. Penfold
of the Australian Commonwealth Se
rum institute, London. In preparing
diphtheria and other serums, the
plasma or fluid of the blood drawn
from horses has been separated after
the red corpuscles have settled, and
the latter have been thrown away.
Conceiving that this practice might
be improved, Doctor Penfield returned
the red corpuscles into the veins of a
horse that had been bled. The result
of this injection was an astonishing
quickening of the formation of new
blood, and, while the normal average
of blood in a horse is 38 quarts, it
was found that 50 quarts in a week
could be drawn from the animal with
out lessening vitality more than the
usual! smaller bleeding. The compo
sition of the blood was not materially
affected. Tollowing the first experi
ment, the red corpuscles have been
returned to the entire 30 or 40 horses
bled in the institute, and the effect is
the same in all.
Lightship’s Perilous Voyage.
" Ships were imperiled when Nantuck
et Shoales beacon, the leading mark
for transatlantic shipping making port
at New York, was torn from its lone
ly and important station by a hurri
cane, After inquiry from several
ships that missed the floating beacon
and almost anxious search by a wire
less combing of the seas, the mystery
of the lightship’s disappearance was
solved when she put in at New Bed
ford. The lightship had been thirty
six hours making port on a run of 100
miles. The hurricane, which blew her
away and snapped the moorings,
reached a velocity of ninety miles an
hour. Mate L. O. Johnson, her keep
er, said that it was much as he and
nls- fifteen men could do to hold their
own. Light vessels are not built for
speed, and their emergency equipment
is not often called on.
Owes Her Life to Parrot.
Her parrot’s shrieks saved the life
of a younz woman in New York city.
The parrot watched its mistress mix
up a tumblerful of iodine and wood al
cohol and drink it. 4Vhen she dropped
to the floor the parrot shrieked, 'l'he
woman had quarreled at the bhreak
fast table with her husband, who had
gone into the front room, while his
wife went into the kitchen. As xoon
as he discovered what the parrot’s
sereams meant, he administered nill
and eggs as an antidote, A doctor
summoned by a policeman said that
the young woman would recover,
