If tie Savannah river, which is
the seventh longest in the United
States, should be put in such con
dition as to allow largo river steam
era to ply her waters between here
and Savannah the railroads would
necessarily reduce their rates even
if the boats were not being run, the
channel would be there. The rail
roads are fast gaining a monoply in
this section of the country and when
they do gain their goal why what
will become of the small merchants?
The prospects for the future are
very grievous in this respect and
that is necessary to check them is
the endorsement by the people of
this organization. No money is
asked for. All that is desired is your
endorsement of this move and your
presence at the convention. At the
first meeting of the Association the
officers will lie elected and a com
mitiee chosen to go before Congress
and ask for our rights.
While the citizens of Augusta are
agitating this cause it should be
clearly understood that the benefits
derived are mutual and the smallest
town in the Savannah river valley
will be benefited proportionally as
will Augusta and Augustans.
A large number of delegates for
this convention will be invited but
let ail those interested in this move
come. Railroad rates Vvill be un
usually low as the convention will be
held during Merry-Makers week
when everyone within many miles of
Augusta will be present.
Nobody were ever busier than
are the Merry-Makers. Every pos¬
sible want or desire of the people
will be granted and not a stone will
be unturned for the pleasure of the
thousands of visitors that will ilock
into Augusta that week. The largest
crowd that was ever seen in Augusta
is looked for on this occasion and
well they might come for never be¬
fore has such a show been given in
the history of the South. The at¬

INDUSTRIAL DAY.
The following letter was received:
“135 Broad Street, Augusta, Ga.,
15th, 1900 —To The Merry
Association—Gentlemen:
“By request of your committee of
conference with the trades unions
(Augusta Federation of Trades), we
beg to make the following:
ft ( The trades unions of Augusta
right loyally endorse the action of
the Merry-Makers’ Association in
setting apart one day as “Industrial
Day," and cheerfully pledge them¬
selves to participate in the parade
with banners, flags and badges, and
urge upon their friends to assist in
making the day worthy of the occa
sion; and request that your honor

holiday among the manufacturers of
Augusta and invite and specially re¬
quest them to represent their var¬
ious callings on floats, illustrating
and teaching objectively the source
of Augusta’s wealth, to-wit: “In¬
dustry." (Signed), “Andrew Mul
cay, Chairman of Committee of
Augusta Federation of Trades.”
This means that every working
man, woman and child in the vicini
ty of Augusta will turn out in the
largest parade ever witnessed in the
South.
The committee from the Merry
Makers have met with wonderful
success and all the Mill authorities
have signified their intention and de¬
sire lo let their employees off and j
many will furnish handsome floats.
Doubtless many of our readers will
recall the grand carnivals and trades
displays that this city furnished sev¬
eral years ago. Thinking that the
public were tiring of such the Carni¬

features but the demands from our
neighborhood have been so great
that the Merry-Makers’ Association

Miss Bertram spent a very pleasant

There were several who attended
