Interest of the Railroads in
- Building Up the Grzat
- Vegetable Industry.
Writing in the Business Mag
azine of Knozville, on the growth
of the South Mr. E. W. Mayo,
says that the great development
of the iron and coal industries
in Alabama and of the market
gardening in the Southern part
of the State has beenlargely due
tothe low rates made by the
railroads.
It costs very little if any more
to ship vegetables from Southern
Alabama and Mississippi to Chic
agoand St. Louis than it costs to
ship from Tenn.
Some years ago complaint was
made by a shipper against this
practice and the Inter-State Com
merce decided that the roads
ought to charge more from
Southern Alabama and Mississi

this kind would have been to cut

these States out of the northern
markets.
The roads wanted to develop
fruit and vegetable growing in
the Gulf Coast section even if
they did not make any money
bauling these products to the
distant markets. They knew
that if they could help build up
a large industry of this kind
they would get more passengers
ou their trains and they would
get other freight to haul,
The point which Mr. Mavo
makes is that all governments
which undertake to make rates
have to do it on the basis of dis
tance. One resuilt is that the
products of such a country are
not freely exchasged with the
country itself. For example,
the farmers of western Germa
ny canaot sell their wheat in
eastern Germany because of
freight rates, consequently the
west Germany farmers being
near the coast have to export
surplus grain to Eogland where
they come in competition with
wheat from the United States,

remarks in full below:
‘‘l have beenm commissioned by
your comradss and friends here as
sembled, to offer their congratula

of your married life.
‘‘Mlile stone after milestone has
‘been sighted, attained and passed in
in the up-grade journey of your life
from youth with its flower decked
hedge skirting your sun-lit pathway.
Through the advancing yearsof man
hood and womanhood, with their
wealth of golden grain glistening
with the dews of morning or bending
to the kiss of the evening breeze,
still upward and onward until, the
summit attained, you pause for a
day’s rest in the shadow of the mon
ument of Time, on whose hither side
is recorded the legends of the past,
while the nsther side shows the
Angel of Destiny holding an unwrit
ten scroll and pointing with extended
finger to the west where no ray of
light discloses the mysteries of the
future or gives a tokcn of the recerd
of the coming years.
‘**Many and varied have been the
vicissitudes of your eventful lives.
Sometimes your pathway has been

hava come to gladden each passing
day. Sometimes your way has been
