Twe little girls, Don and Hazel
Thompson, who were traveling
‘with the Womack medicine show,
were this morning taken in cus
tody by the W. C. T. U. women,
backed by J. E. Mercer, Dr. C.
A. Holtzendorf, E, N, Davis and
other good men, and for the
present turned over to the guard
ianship of Mesdames E, D. Stone,
M. Hogle and Mother Enter
prise. Their mother, Mrs. Thom
pson formerly of this colony but
now of Macon, was making mer
chandise of these little girls, ten
and twelve years old, by hiring
them out to a traveling company
in which there are no women.
Nightly those girls of tender
age, in company with two others
of childish years, were brought
before the public. Instead of
the shelter of home their hours
were spent in a little tent amid
suroundings to say the least not
at all elevating. Instead of the
school room they faced the glare
of the footlights in a traveling
show.
Steps will be taken to place
those children where they can
dev lop their natural talent and
make good honorable, useful
citizens and if the moth‘er. who
has shown herself in more ways
than one, unworthy the name,
comes to get them she will easily
be proven not a fit cutsodian.
‘Thanks for the ready response
;and sympathetic heart-throbs
from the brave men who stood
by us. Donations will be thank
fully received and may be left
with Editor Mercer and Dr.
Holtzendorf. The other two girls
departed with the proprietor
of the show who says he istheir
father.
