The great development of the
lumber business in the South
during recent vears has been
made possible only by the facili

been no less active in exploiting
the resources of the Sonth than
in the case of iron and coal indus

It is only under the competition

Another Unfortunate Catches
| A Bright Gleam of Light.
“I thought I had better write a
letter and tell you'just whatlam
doing and how happy I feel
Well first is I just came in from
church; we had a lovely sermon
on the three Stars that was seen
by the Wise men, who knew
God was sure there and that God
gives us a light, a hand to show
us the way, and some times peo
ple will be guided by it and
others will not, but I was one
who did listen to God’'s call and
came just the way he had opened
for me, although I had a very
dim Star at first, but all at once
it became brighter and now it
sparkels before me to warn me.
I have indeed thrown my very
self at the feet of Jesus, as St.
Mary Madgline did who was for
given by Himself, alone and
there I found joy, also peace and
rest and comfort,as I know he
will never turn his back on me.
Oh, now we are never old and
tiresom in his sight, he v.ill cling
tous to the last when friends
forsake us.

Deafness Cannot be Cured
lby local application, as they cannot
’reach the diseased portion of the
ear. There is only one way to cure
deafness, and that is by constitution
al romedies. Deafness is c«used by
an i: flamed condition of the mucous
lining of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is inflamed you have a rum
bling sound or imperfect hearing and
when it is entirely closed, ,Deafness
is the result, and unless the inflama

restored to its normal condition,
hesring will be destroyed forever;
nine cases out of ten are caused by
QOatarrh, which is nothing but an in

of speech is good?” “Good is av
adjective.” “And what is the gram
matical function of an adjective?’
“T'o limit a noun.” “How, then, do
you apply an adjective to God, call
ing him good and thus limiting the
limitless?”
By this philosophy, therefore,
God cannot be described, no adjes
tive applics to him, and we can nei
ther preach about him nor urge any
to worship him. How, then, can we
have anything to do with him? In
the conversation described above the
Christian Brahman took his turn in
asking questions: “You believe in
God as infinite?” “Yes, I so be
lieve.” “And you say that no ad
jective can be applied to him?” “I
so affirm.” “How, then, can you
distinguish him from nothing?”
That becomes the question, how can
you distinguish him from nothing?
You cannot by logic or discourse,
but you may by long process of con
templation or of asceticism bring
yourself to a place where you will
unde-tand. Then it will appear to
you aat God is the only reality and
that everything which men regard
as real is an illusion—earth and
man and sky and devils and god:
and life and death and my own sou!
—all are such stufls as dreams, hav
ing no real existence, for that which
is is the infinite. My own existence
is illusion, like all the rest, cxeept
ing as I come to identify myself with
the changeless, timeless, limitless,
indescribable ultimate and absolute.
—Chautauquan.
Striking a Bargain.
A story is told of St. Foix, the
French poet.. Like many other stu
dents aspiring to the gifts of this
classic art, he forgot to pay his
debts. IHis creditors were larger in
proportion than the checks receive:
for his pocms. Ire long he founu
himself in a precarious condition,
but somehow he managed to evade
all ereditors through the exertion of
his caustic wit. One day he sat in
the barber’s chair with his face lath
ered and ready to be shaved. Sud
denly a creditor approached him and
in stentorian tones demanded the
payment of a bill. “Won’t you wait
until I get a shave?” inquired the
poct in utmost civility. “Certain
ly,” replied the other, pleased at the
prospect of collecting some money.
St. loix made the barber a witness
to the asrecment, then calmly wiped
the lather {rom his face. lle wore
a beard to his dving day.

am in favor cof Pereival.”
“Don’t call the kid Percival, sis,”

you do ail the gang in the street will

~ “I never dreamed, Mr, Smykins,”
’ she said, “that your attentions to me

young man. “You thought I had

Chinece Letter Writing,
1t is customary in China for the
writer of a letter to address the man

)the wish of your imbecile junior.”
