FITZGERALD, GBORGIA, SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1906,
GARTERSVILLE'S MAYOR
NAILS NEWSPAPER FAKE.
CARTERSVILLE, GA, Jan. 23.
The arcticle in today’s Constitu
tion placing Bartow county in the
Howell column after Hoke
Smith’s spzech here yesterday Ils
TAKEN AS A HUGE JOKE. Twenty
representative men were inter
viewed and all assert that Smith
will carry this county by a large
majority.
Despite a heavy downpour of
rain Sunday night and until ten
o’clock Monday morning at eieven{
o’clock Mr. Smith was greeted,
by a crowded house, several fail
ing to gain admittance to court
room where Mr. Smith spoke.
A written agreement was cir
culated late yesterday afternoon
piedging support to Hoke ‘Smithi
and it now has 160 signers. Out
of 170 representative citizens ap-‘
proached 160 signed the agree
ment. -
Hoke Smith’s speeech here
Monday has made him many new
friends, and any fair-minded
man will admit that Smith’s
strengthin this county is at least
four to one against the fleld.

in the shadow of the church” I
felt like sending you an extract
faom a letter from one of those
unfortunate ones who is trying
to lead a new life and from whom
I had just heard. Mrs. C.
. 'The following is the extract
refered to: *
“Even my two birds are every
day singing praises to God at
the very tops of their voices, as
for myself Ican’t look back to the
past as it disgusts me to think
how foolish Iwas, I have found
that God’s promisc is true where
he says if we will seek first his
glory all other things will be
added unto us. I am trying every
day to do His will and- keep his
commandments, I haven’t been
bad sincelcame, and praise be to
God I am happy to know I hav’nt.
I wish every one to know I am a
different girl and never again
sball go back to the past life of
sin. I want to telll all who keow
me what God has done for me
and that our dear Savior can do
the same for them, if they will
only bave faith and trust in him.
’ *I pray God every day to help
me to overcome all and love him
‘more and more and to help the
kind people in Fitzgerald to help
every poor soul who is wander
ing away. The good Shepherd
locks up the lost sheep and
brings them safe intc the fold,

Will a Gentlemen Swear.
e
Afropos of Police commiss
ionefd Biflgham’s fat oath by
“the ninf gods of war,”” Dr.
Parkburdf of New York has
laid down the dictum, No
gentleman will swear.,” The
New York Post has whimsi
cally applied logic to the Park
hurst declaration, with this res
ult: No gentleman will swear;
a Jady is no gentleman; there
fore, alady will swear. Again,
0o gentleman will swear Gen.
Bingham swears; therefore, Gen.
Bingham is no gentlaman; hence,
he must be a lady.
But, 3asa matter of fact, may
one swear and still bea gentle
man? we have it on authority
that ole may smile and smile
#hd be a villain, but how abont
the use of strong expletives?
The delightful Mr. Pickwick
had au oath or two which he
used upon occasion. Any num
ber of Shakespear's characters
swear. But toleave fiction and
get do'ln. to real people, was
George' Washington a gentle
man? It has been asserted that
under proyocation he swore at
his servants, horses and dogs.
Thomas Jeffersoa was accoun
ted a gentleman, yet he some
times used strong language.
“Old Hickory” Jackson’s gex
pression, “By t etero®l,”’
has become proverz], thougl it
is probably not the harsikest
term he ever used. There is an
old stcy of a prominent dWine
who. during a storm at sea, thane
ked_ God that the sailors we‘
still swearing, since the captain
had told him that as long as the
sailors were profane there was
no danger. 1
Moreover Lincoln Steffens,
the well known author of ‘‘graft”’
articles, asserts that one may
not only swear and be a gentle
man, but a christian as well.
He cites Tom L. Johnson of
Cleveland and Gem:ge E Cole of
Chicago in illustration of the
point. Mr Cole, He is a very
pious man who swears a great
deal. At the very moment he
is rolling an oath under his ton
gue he may be performing an
act of Christian charity that will
call down blessings upon his
head. Tom Johnson frequently
swears when he is working for
reforms and Joe Folkof Mis
souri has been known to use an
oath when chasing the Missouri
grafters. In all likelihood
young Mr Rockefeller would
not soil his mouth with an oath.
but Andrew Carnegie might say,
“Dam, take this million and
found a hospital.”’
“When you go into the silence
you still the chatter and argu
ment of your reasoning or every
day mind, and listen to your own
soul wherein the Infinite sits
ready to commune with you.
When you go into the silence
there is no resigning of your
self to anybody but "YOUR OWN
