. oviD’S CITY.
Ovidopol, one of the towns in
southern Russia where ruffianism
has been running riot against the
Jews, proclaims itself “Ovid’s City.”
Those who gave this little port on
the Dniester its name identified it
wvith the Tomi, to which the Roman
poet, Ovid, was banished by the
Emperor Augustus because of the
unwholesome character of his de
cadent poetry, according to the em-
Eeror; because he had too much
nowledge of a secret that pained
Augustus, according to the poet’s
own hint. But the real Tomi is now
believed to be the Roumanian port
Kustendji, which boasts a statue of
Ovid in the chief square.

Rocked In the Cradle of the Deep.
Colonel S. 11. Lucas, a retired
army oflicer, who died June 10 last
at Los Angeles, left a will in which
he made the request that his body
be eremated and the ashes placed in
side of a copper globe with his name
and acc engraved thereon and under
this the following: “Rocked in the
cradle of the deep, I lay me down
in peace to sleep,” and that this
glole be given to the officers in
charce of some United States man
of-war, with the request that it be
thrown overboard in the Pacifie
ocean midway between San Irancis
co. and Ilonolulu. San Francisco
Argonaut.
Winter Ailments.
Many winter ailments can be pre
vented or mitizated by the use of
proper diet. Children who are per
sistent co.d catchers are greatly ben
efited by small doses of codliver oil.
It supplies them with extra fuel and
helps to quicken the circulation.
IFor this reason, too, people who
suifer from chilblains should be gen
erously fed, particularly with fat
containing foods, for chilblains are
caused by depressed vitality and a
slow circulation which leads to these
inflamed patches forming on various
parts of the body, usually on the fin
gers and toes.

Improvement on “It Is 1.” |
When W. D. Howells speaks of
our national habit of making “to
be” govern the accusative he doubt
less refers to our “it’s me.” Abso
lutely ungrammatical, of course.
But the I'renchman says “C’est
moi,” and that seems to strike the
note of modesty in rejecting the
nominative for the self accusative
’nttitude. Even the Germans, who
‘are seldom lacking in self assertion,
do not rise to the egotism of “it is
I.” They invert it, thus giving the
lead to a mew American locution,
‘and say, “I am it.”—lLondon Chron
icle.
A Cautious Lassie.
A young man in Lynn, wishing to
please his sweetheart, acted as his
own banker and made a pleasantly
imposing column of entries in a
bankbook, which he then gave her
to examine. The young woman,
with a foresight hardly compatible
with what the French call the
“orande passion,” trotted down to
the bank to verify entries. The
marriage is now declared off, and
one can’t help feeling it would have
been wrecked anyway by an incom
patibility of temperaments.—Bos
ton Transcript.
King George's Title.
King George’s title of king of the
Hellenes is due to the fact that
when he was elected to the throne
he was acclaimed by the nation as
king, not of Greece, but of the
Greeks. The great powers admitted
the title of king of the Greeks, but
out of consideration for the suscep
tibilities of the sultan they adopted
for official purposes the title of king
of the Hellenes, as distinguished
from the Greeks still under Turkish
rule.
“Bedad.”
Does an Irishman ever say “be
dad ?” If not, most of the Irish an
ecdotes will have to be rewritten.
Since the activity of the Gaelic
league it is not possible to write an
Irish dialect story and have its ex
pressions go unchallenged. Accord
ing to the Gaelic league, only the
Irish comic characters on the Eng
lish and American stage say “be
dad.” :
The World's Water Supply.
A shrinkage in the world’s water
supply is predicted by M. Martel,
the French explorer of caves.
Through the erosion and corrosion
of the earth’s surface, he says, the
water level is being continually low
ered, and unless measures for pre
venting this are adopted a large part
of the world will a few centuries
hence die of thirst.
Bolters and Chewers.
Dr. Osler divides people into two
classes, the bolters and the chewers
—not referring to doors or tobacco,
but to the prevailing methods of
cating. Ile appeals to the dentists
of the world to help make the chew
