it out of it but because politics in some of its

¥ The Douglas Enterprise was simply immense
Mast week. It carried more than five pages of
¥ 2 'vertising.
E O
Some of our exchange carry as much as
~ twenty apnouncments for county office. That
~beats us, some quite.

| The voters at the ballot box one week from
tomorrow will set it all right and we willall abide
the result wondering why we were ever excited

i With J. A. J. Henderson in the senate, and
£ J Dorminy in the house, we will be as well
represented in the legislature as any county in
Georgia.
W oW
We think pretty well of Ras Wilcox, per
sonally, but we would not vote for our brother if
he was put out by the crowd that pursuaded Mr.
Wilcox to make the race.
(]
If Mr. Wilcox has allowed his personal am
bition to again represent the county in the legis
lature, lead him into this race as the candidate
of the Irwinville crowd he has nobody to blame
but himself when he is defeated.
e
The puny push from Irwinville will have to
vote for Ras now, but if they had any idea it
- would elect him they would get sick rather than
_ goto the polls. They want him defeated as bad
'~ asthey wanted him to run, and its fully as impor
tant to their purpose.
;A
. If Brother Wilcox intered into his closet and
prayed Saturday morning, we fear he forgot
' one thing “Lord save me from my friends, the
enemy who are coming over from Irwinville
today to persuade me to run for the legislature
because they love Fitzgerald so—so much less
than they do Irwinville.”
E
Mr. Wilcox thinks that he should have been
- consulted about the candidates for the house and
senate. He will find out that the friends who
stood by him in the past think theyshould have
been consulted about his candidacy. They will
not stand for a candidate put out by he men
who are opposing the very things they want.
xR
: Let Irwinville elect her candidate, Fitzger
ald can’t afford to help her this time. Every
_ vyote cast here against J. A. J. Henderson or E.
J. Dorminy will be counted by the Irwinville
. crowd as a vote against the Mew County. They
will take it to the legislative as an arguement
against passing our new county bill. Mark the
prediction.
' MM
‘ The Enterprise hasa deep interest in the
present county campaign. It means a great
- deal for Fitzgerald and the county. We are
~ willing to make any reasonable personal sacri
fice for what we consider the best interest of
- the great majority of the voters of the county.
The new county is the paramount issue and to
- that we shall subordinate every other question.
- N
- ¥Yes, Oh! Yes, Pauline, we will get the New
~ County all right. The little ripple of the puny
~ opposition is an acknowledgement of its weak
“mess. Does it look reasonable that they would
run a candidatde who introduced the biil if they
~ thought they could polla corporals guard of a
. yote in an open contest. Their candidate prom
ises to put through the bill, that it is the wish of
an “‘overwhelming majority.”
a M
Those who oppose the new county, there
. are not many of them, but about all of them
. that could be mustered, shut up the chickens,
_ turned the cow and calf together, called the
dogs and packed off to Fitzgerald last Saturday
~ perpared to camp on Wilcoxs trailtill he announc
_ ed, not that they want to see him reelected to
fthe legislature but they want to see him defeat
_ed by Fitzgerald. For what? well, isn’t it
plain to you? To put him out of humor with
Fitzgerald in the hope that he will oppose the
new county bill at the next session. He says
wont and we have just enough confidence in him
, The County Campaign.
Two years ago we elected our representa
tive on the prohibition issue. We worked and
voted with the prohibition faction, as we always
do, and we sent to the legislature the strongest
prohibitionist in the county. Just after the
election another matter more important, if possi
ble, than prohibition came to the front.” That
of a new county. Our representative went to
legislature last summer with the endorsement
of the people and introduced and came near
passing his prohibition measure, but was finally
delayed until next session on account of a
technicality. The New County proposition was
also delayed, or, so far as that session is con
cerned, lost by the accidental and unavoidable
absence of a committeeman. Our, representa
tive declares his purpose to push both measures
at the next session just two months off. We
hope he will be successful and believe he will be
able to pass both bills.
Mr.J. A. J. Henderson, who gave us most
valuable assistance on the new county matter at
the last session, was induced to make the race
for the senate on the theory that he could do
more effective work as the senator elect than he
could as an ordinary citizen. Certainly we have
no better man for the place than he is We
have heard no reason urged why he should not
be elected. Fitzgerald ought to vote for him out
of pure gratitude for what he did last summer
in the new county matter. Certainly 5o man
who was in Atlanta and saw how earnest, how
active and how effective he was in the fight we
had on hand, will hesitate to vote for him.
Dr. E. J. Dorminy was aanounced as a can
didate for the house. We had nothing to do
with his announcement, nor indeed any know
ledge of the probability of his candidacy until it
wasannounced in this paper. We at once recog
nized that one of the best med in the county had
been named and believed that he would give us
valuable assistance in bringing about the pas
sage of the new county bill if he went to Atlanta
this summer as the nominee, which would give
him prestige and influence.
Everything looked propitious and reassur
ing from the new county standpoint until it be
came apparent that the opponents of the new
oounty were making a systematic and organized
effort to induce Hon. B, E. Wilcox to run for
senate or house, with the evident purpose of
sowing discension in our ranks. A tremendously
overwhelming majority of the peopleof the coun
ty favor the new county movement, believe that
the county is large enough, rich enough and
populous enough and growing rapidly enough to.
warrant its division. The puny opposition from
the shadow of the present cour: house in the
woods saw their opportunity in appealing to the
personal vanity arnd political ambitions of Mr.
B. E. Wilcox, and a set campaign was inaugurat
ed. Day and night he was haunted by the anti
new county faction and its emmisaries, and
notwithstanding the warning of his personal
friends who realized that it was a well planned
effort to make trouble for the new county move
ment, they succeeded after an all day set-toin
working Mr. Wilcox up to the point of announc
ing late Saturday afternoon.
Seeing that he was hard pressed by the
men who are fighting the new county movement
—they were nearly all here and hanging around
his store like—well they were there when we
handed him the following note.
Hon. B. E. Wilcox, City.
Dear Ras:
But for the estimate I put on our personal
friendship, I would not say another word to you
on the subject of the legislative race. lam
disgusted that the enemies of Fitzgerald (my
enemies and yours) have so nearly succeeded
in bringing about discensions in our ranks,
which is sure to result should you decide to
enter the race.
I have not intimated to you that you would
be defeated because I knew your nature would
rebel at the suggestion, and should not have
mentioned that matter if you had not mention
ed it yourself in conversation this noon. Your
defeat at the hands of Fitzgerald is all the
schemers want.
You will sacrifise many friecds, jeopardize
the new county, as well as jeopardize your pro
hibition measure ty getting into this race, and
last but not least, you will please the - men who
have fought you and who are now fighting Fitz
geral, men who have always been opposed to
prohibition.
Allow me to say that I am utterly disgusted
at the prospect. Sincerely,
J. E. MERCER.
About two bours after reading our note
Mr. Wilcox came over to make hisannouncment
We realized a good man had fallen a victim to
the machination of the enemies of Fitzeerald,
and we promised him that regardless. of our
personal esteem we would do our best to roll up
a good large majority against him. He is a
good man, much better than some of thz people
who say hard things against him, but he has
made a mistake, so far as Fitzgerald is con
cerned. We can not afford to take the candid
ate of the people who are oppesing the very
thing that we most desire. Mr. Wilcox’s can
didacy is all right for Irwinville, although tbey
do not want, or expect to see him elected. They
want to see him defeated and expect to profit
- there by. Of course they will have to vote for
him, but they can only profit by his defeate,
and Mr. Wilcox says they will not profit even
by that for he promises to pass thenew county
bill whether defeated and he will stand by his
word. We expect to see the new county crea
ted, although the puny opposition has suc
ceeded in complicating the situation somewhat,
A thing so just and reasonable and so much
desired by so large a percent of the people can
ot fail
To bring success cut of the situation, how
ever, intelligent, united and patriotic action is
necessary. We muststand by our guns. We
can not take the candidates put out by the enemy.
Let’s take our own candidates and push stead
ily forward to success. We ought to make it
practically unanimous in this prescinct for Hen
erson and Dorminy.
The Enterprise is for the New County, if
our best friends have to be sacrificed to secure
it.
Mo
Hon. B. E.- Wilcox has announced for re
election to the legislature. =
We do oppose and shall oppose his candidacy
with all of the zeal of which we are capable. In
doing so we are actuated by the single motive—
our duty to Fitzgerald.
We find it distastful to oppose a man
like Ras Wilcox, he has been our personal
friend and our political ally from the date of
our acquaintance. He is a much better man
than some of those, who are not friendly to him,
credit him with being, a man of strong convict
ions and phenominal energy, who finds plenty to
do that makes him enemies and keeps them so.
He is not a perfect man however, and therefore
not infallible. He has made a mistake in his
announcment for the legislature. In doing so
he simply fell a victim toa human weakness, a
personal ambition to hold office. He has allow
ed himself imposed on by people who have been
anything but friendly to bim, in politics
especially and thisis where it touches us, BY
PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING INDUSTRI
OUSLY AGAINST FITZGERALD'S BEST
INTEREST, by PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO
OTHER MOTIVE THAN TO DESTROY
OUR CHANCES FOR A NEW COUNTY.
In opposing Mr. Wilcox in this campaign,
weshall treat him absolutly fairly. We wouldn’t
know how to be unfair to a man we esteem SO
highly.
We believe as honestly as we believe any
thing, that it is our duty, and the duty of
the community and county to elect Dr. E. J.
Dorminy, and we believe that they will do it by
a large majority. If you want to know our
reason for it, read this paper.
M A
Strange Bed Fellows.
Somebody said somewhere some time ago
that ‘“‘politics make strange bed fellows.” If
anybody bad told the editor of this paper a
year ago, that he would oppose the candidacy
of B. E. Wilcox orJ.B. D. Paulk, we would have
laughed at the suggestion, but we ARE just the
same, with all the earnestness of our nature.
Let’s see why. Certainly, it would be pleasant
work personally to advocate the candidacy of
either. On our list of friends, they are both
near the top, friends of the kind we know how
to esteem. There’s a reason, and but one that
we know of. It is simply this, we have put
aside personal feelings for Fitzgerald’s best
interest.

For STATE SENATOR |
We hereby announce Hon. J. A. J.

FOR COMMISSIONER. ‘
We announce the name of H. T.

John Gaff, resigned. To be voted
for in the primary election, to be
Treia Agrril 25. VOTERY,
Hon. B. E. Wilcox in his published card
states that he approached Dr. Dorminy and
stated to him, ‘‘l hope to pass my high liscense
bill, during the first ten days of the next session
of the next legislature. Thenl expect to put
through immediately thereafter, the New Coun
ty bill and if I do both and you are elected to
succeed me, can we depend upon you to push
the high license bill into the New County?”’
He says that the doctor said to him, “I will see
you later about that matter.”
Dr. Dorminy tells the Enterprise that the
conversation he had with Mr, Wilcox on the
subject, was interupted by a third party, that
he has never felt that it was his duty to go to
Mr. Wilcox and make any explanation. He is
not running as representative of the New Coun
ty, but he isa candidate to represent Irwin
County, tbat Mr. Wilcox was elected on the
high liscense issue, and further states that he
will certainly put no obstacles in hisway nor try
to undo any work that he does on that line. He
autborizes us to say that he has no objections to
offer to the high liscense measureintroduced by
Mr. Wilcox, which he promises to pass at the
approachlng summer session, and that if any
body is depending on him to undo the work that
they are mistaken in him. He says that he is
perfectly willing for Mr. Wilcox to fix that, that
it is his right and his duty, since he was elected
on that issue.
As to what will be done in the new county
when created, he has no right to say, as he is
not running as a representative of the New
County, but as a representative of Irwin County.
Everybody who knows Dr. Ed. Dorminy,
knows that what he says may be depended on.
There is no more honorable or trust worthy
man in the county.
O
Saturday was a record day in Fitzgerald,
not only in political matters but in a commercial
way. The retail trade was immense and kept
up until midnight. One store was forced to
close on account of the Sunday hour and sold
fourteen dollars worth of drv goods while ‘‘clos
ing up.” The Empire store broke the record
with more than a $1,200.00 trade, ‘‘and hit er
rainin,”’
M A 4
We have but one brother and we are proud
of him, but if he was to get into politics and we
knew he was backed up by the crowd that pulled
Ras Wilcox into this campaign, we would vote
against him. Yes Ras, its easy to vote against
you on this proposition, altho we never have done
so before. :
No, No Skin flint, that puny Irwinville push
can’t ram any sortof candidate down our throat.

If you find a knocker, knock him and
charge it to the Enterprise,
